Arms or shoulders first in the downswing?

I am having a problem right now with an outside-to-inside path.  I video taped myself from dtl and fo views and I think I have most of my early extension and too-much-forward-lean problems solved.  However, I do know that I am consciously thinking to myself that I have to

1. slightly shift weight to left

2. start unwinding hips

3. start rotating the shoulders

4. start swinging the arms

I just read some stuff online that says you should start swinging with your arms BEFORE you rotate your shoulders.  So the sequence in that case would be:

1. slightly shift weight to left

2. start unwinding hips

3. start swinging the arms

4. start rotating the shoulders

Any thoughts?

Three thoughts:

  1. You should create a "My Swing" thread.
  2. The shoulders almost always start down before the "arms" begin unloading (but turning your shoulders "carries" your arms with them, too).
  3. Feel ain't real. It's tough to say feels will work with you.

iacas, then it seems what i read is either wrong or just from a different swing philosophy.  my body position does not seem to support letting your arms fall wherever if your shoulders pull your arms.

would you say your arms need to swing "more towards the ground" than where your shoulders pull them?  it seems my hands drift way too far away from me if i let my shoulder turn put them over the ball.  it would be nice if there were a simple drawing tool to illustrate.  so i'll go with a video instead.

It sure does "look" like he initiates the downswing like this:

1. slight thrust to the right followed with a hip turn

2. torso and shoulders start to turn

3. right arm drops but left arm is still connected to shoulder turn

4. when club is parallel to the ground, shoulders appear square (considering his tilt)

5. shoulder rotation "slows down" and obeys his tilt as club head "releases" into the ball

6. after contact, left shoulder whips around tilted spine axis

Am I missing something?  It seems there was a moment where his arms went faster than his shoulders. I know that's a different assessment than what I asked about.

Just going off your handicap, good chance you need more than a slight shift.

I just read some stuff online that says you should start swinging with your arms BEFORE you rotate your shoulders.  So the sequence in that case would be:

1. slightly shift weight to left

2. start unwinding hips

3. start swinging the arms

4. start rotating the shoulders

Any thoughts?

Just because someone says that's what happens doesn't mean you immediately implement that feel into your swing. Whoever wrote that article or post doesn't know what your priority piece is.

Three thoughts:

      Hi there! I also took a look at your swing. First, mvmac's response is stellar. Study that video and try to replicate the swing you see in his example video, placing emphasis on keeping your lower body more stable during the swing. Some golf basics: hitting behind the golf ball (ie a fat shot) is almost always the result of not getting your weight over to the left side at impact. By getting your weight over onto the left side before impact you will be promoting a slew of good things, like coming into the golf ball with the hands ahead of the ball at impact and the shaft leaning forward, all things that will promote hitting the ball first and then the ground, and hitting down on the ball.  In your swing what I saw was a tremendous amount of hip rotation in the back swing combined with a sway to the right side. At the top of the backswing your hips are so open and your body so far off the ball that its going to take an incresibly timed athletic move to get back to your address position and onto your left side prior to impact. Instead, think of the golf.swing as more of a rotary action. Your upper body turns away from the golf ball while your lower body tries to maintain the position you were in at address. As you wind the upper body back, try to feel like you are restricting the hips and teyinf to keep them in the same position as address. In actualityx the wonding back of the upper bidy will pull the hips back slightly and you should feel some tension, like your body has been wound back like a spring. From there the correct move is to do the opposite, rotate your hips to the left, shift your body weight onto your left side, and let the lower body and club fall onto the correct plane. From there you can swing hard and through the golf ball. A good drill is to practice the forgoing with 1/2 swing, pausing for a moment between the back swing and downswing. Hope this helps!  P.s. fatigue will always affect performance. If your arms feel tired and your focus is gone, its always best to move onto chipping/putting.
