I just signed up to join the fray and after spending some time at the Valspar Championship last week, I have to say that it is nice to see the other players cutting kevin na a break. They and they alone should be the only ones whose opinion really coounts. What is disturbing is the heckling and drunk fest that some PGA event stops have propagated. The Owls' Nest at the right side of 17 at Innisbrook was much more calm versus last year and the latest incident with Na and bay Hill should shine some light on the abnormalties that come with public attended Tournaments. the PGA Tour should be alittle more concerned with the etiquette of the patrons. Bubba Watson may embrace the chaos, but he is one of one who does so. I met Kevin Na at the Valspar and he came across very cordial and chatty. There are many other golfers out there who get a free pass about their pace of play. K. Bradley comes to mind.

Agreed. JB Holmes took literally 3 minutes to take his shot on 18 on Saturday.  Two weeks ago Kokrak took 5+ plus minutes  on a shot from the trees only to punch it over the water for an unplayable.  Many of the players don't even start talking to the caddies about the shot until after their opponent hits.  This wastes a lot of time.

The fact that there are a few others just as bad, doesn't excuse any individual.  Rather than "going easy on NA", I say turn up the heat on the other sloths out there!

And throw the unruly patrons out.  There's no room for that on the course, period.

If you're talking about Na in general then I agree, pace of play should be maintained, same goes for Bradley.  If you're referring to the Saturday round at Valspar, Garrigus was the cause of the slow play warnings, not Na.

I agree, what's with the chant of "I shot the sheriff" after a drive?  A bunch of old Marley fans or is there some other relevance I'm missing?

Yep.  There are those that say you can't police everyone, but you don't have to.  You catch someone, you throw 'em out.....and you keep doing that.  Eventually it will come to be understood, that there really are consequences to being a douche.  It won't happen overnight, but it'll NEVER happen until that first step is taken......

No, I'm afraid there's nothing of relevance you missed. Seems more like the typical alcohol-induced douchy-ness that's been prevalent at PGA tour events recently

i hate it when those trolls do that.  and then people watch them on tv and think they cant even walk to their ball if someone else is away and their ball is ahead and off to the side.

Actually Keagan is faster than you think, there are a couple  of times where he gets stuck dong his dance, but for the most part he is never in a situation where he is warned or put on the clock.

I don't agree with the behavior of some fans (?) against any player, including Na, the same thing happened with Sergio a few years ago playing in the NY area. Sergio changed his grip, grip &  regrip habits. Kevin Na and others need to change immediately. IMO This is inexcusable in the best interest of the game, viewership and opponents in the group. The specific time should be shortened even more and most importantly enforced with a stroke penalty.

I could not agree more with Snedecker's view point the other day. This may sound harsh to some and my view point should not be confused with external factors of crowd crossings, Greens not being cleared etc.

Once its your shot, you should have already determined distance, club selection, wind direction etc, take your 2-3 practice swings and get on with it.

Pat Perez was in the group in front of them, and he put a ball into an unplayable lie and had decided to re-tee, 3rd hole. Set the group behind early on the round - that's at least what the Na camp was saying the week later (heard it from an asst to Na while at Palmer's tournament).

But from a guy who goes to NFL, MLB, NHL, college sports, and occationally NBA and NASCAR - gotta tell you from a fan's point of view PGA golf is too damn slow when you watch in person. PGA had better do something for the sport otherwise you can expect the popularity to decrease from its current state.

David in Fla, I appreciate the Welcome! My browser was on the fritz during that first day and the grammar was horrific on my end. I definitely needed a "drop" on that one. Thanks again and I look forward to chiming in!

You could put Perez and Na on parallel courses playing alone, and Perez could re-tee four or five times during the round and still be finished with lunch before a clean-playing Na putted out on 18. Perez is lightning-fast and will easily make up for one re-tee situation.

I think the only way you're going to speed up play is by more strictly enforcing the rules and penalizing guys for slow play. They always "put them on the clock" but you never see them actually penalized. Until that happens, guys are going to take their time. This is one area where I feel Finchem has really dropped the ball on. The USGA, which runs the Masters, penalized a player last year and I hope they continue to do it if need be. These guys have got to speed up, whether they be good guys or not.

The problem is when someone actually has the balls to penalize a player (like the one last year at the Masters you mentioned), people have a hissy fit about it. :(

The USGA doesn't run The Masters. Augusta National runs the Masters.

I think any hissy fit was partially due to the fact that the penalty was called on a 14 year old kid. Fair or not, there was the appearance that justice wasn't being meted out evenly and that the same penalty would not have been called on a bigger name in a similar scenario.

I don't know whether there is any truth to that critique or not, since I never saw any objective analysis of how much time Guanlang (sp?) was taking over each shot compared to other players. But I do agree that there is always blowback when the penalty is called. Several years ago, I believe a penalty was called on Tiger and Paddy during the final round of a tournament. After the group had the clock put on them, Harrington went on to double bogey the next hole. Even though it worked to his advantage, I recall Woods criticizing the penalty as unnecessary.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
