I finally was able to get a round of golf in today, full 18 holes. A driving range is okay, but playing on a course really helps to see where issues are. My score was well north of par but a fair distance from double par. I flubbed some shots, was able to make some corrections along the way, only wiffed once (I swear the ball ducked, must have been that CaddyShack gopher), and only lost one ball to a water hazard. So, next week's plan is to hit a driving range again and to start isolating one area at a time to correct. But today was all about just having some fun and enjoying a round of golf.

Hello,

I'm just refreshing my swing thread. I've got a different phone and am refreshing bookmarks. I've also got a phone holder on the way to hold the phone for better videos.

golf update:

apart from a minimal amount or range time, I haven't played a round of golf in over a year. I am also currently dealing with a torn meniscus in my left knee so my swing mechanics and lower body will need some adaptation while I figure out what works and what hurts. I am thinking of heading to a local range during lunch for an easy bucket of balls just to help reconnect myself to the game. If I have issues then I'll post questions in an appropriate area or discussion. Then once I've got something sorted out I will upload and link a video for opinions and suggestions on my golf swing.

I'm looking forward to playing golf again.

Mike

Okay, I have issues with uploading to youtube, also with learning the iPhone, and with using the Hudl app from UberSense that seems to only use the selfie lens on the phone.  But anyway, here is a new baseline set of videos that I somehow managed to record and upload today during lunch. This is using the TM R11-S driver with a stiff Phenom shaft in it set at 10.5deg with a 9degree head. A few shots were worm burners, some went left, most either went straight with a fading curve or faded right.  I did not see any slices or hooks.  I was also playing around with the head weights and ended up with the 10 weight inboard and the 1 weight at the toe position.  I know I've got a lot of work to do, so just posting these as my 2017 starting base line with a driver.

I will learn how to clip and edit the videos with the app if these seem okay for quality, otherwise I will just use the regular iPhone camera in video mode and upload those instead of using the app.  I think the app allows me to add lines and stuff, not sure yet if it will generically measure an estimated clubhead speed.  Anyway, feel free to comment constructively, thank you.

I don't use that camera. I use the back-facing camera (the side away from the screen) all the time with Hudl Technique.

Thank you, I opened the app (in a department store) and found the phone camera flipper. I'll use that one next time.

Went to the driving range today at lunch to hit a small bucket of balls and brought two drivers with me, the Cobra Amp Cell-S and an older TM Burner Superfast 2.0, both at 10.5*.  I've been sort of shopping for a new driver, but I now think my time and effort and money would be better spent sorting out my swing (I still might get a new driver, but I can't blame these for my swing).  Looks like today's balls were center and towards the heel and high and low, most shots faded or somewhat sliced to the right. A few went semi-straight, and a couple went low left.

It is really hard to take photos of impact points without face tape or spray, but these sort of show generally where the hits were congregating.

Driving range today at lunch with the new to me TM R15 and the 6 iron, went through a medium bucket of balls. Used the Hudl Technique app and also the Zepp 2 device I picked up last night.  Now I need to filter out way too many videos and digest what it is all showing me. One thing the Zepp showed as an issue was club plane a lot and some hand plane issues. I'm trying to learn how to use the device and app now. I wish it had more than just Michelle Wie in it for comparison.

Our wifi is out at home so I will have to wait to upload any new videos until that is fixed.

The Zepp device did show some wierdness in my hand path and wrist positions that might be affecting the club path and swing planes. I've got lots to work on but want to just focus in on a limited number of things to start with.

I also need to figure out some video editing apps to trim the videos, I haven't figured out how to use the trim function with the Hudl app. (It shows lines but does not cut/trim the video.) Maybe I'll just start using the older GoPro to record videos that I plan to upload and share.

I have temporarily given up on youtube (several logins over the years, google account sign-in, app vs desktop site, android to iphone, patience and frustration) so I am trying these via vimeo.

I see I need to work on my gut and weight some more as well.  ;(

Took the hybrids to the range today and hit about 60 balls (medium bucket). No video but I did have the Zepp device running and put the phone in my pocket to capture hip rotation. These are screen shots of a typical shot from today. These were with the 3H and I'm not quite sure how far they went because the range has a slight rise between the 150 and 200 yard markers.

That's a pretty weak grip. Palmy I'd wager too.

Thanks for the input. I'm starting to work on my posture and stance so I will incorporate some attention to my grip as well. Going to be a messy next few weeks on the range.

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club? • Interesting that Scottie is #10 on the all time money list and he's been on the PGAT for 4 years. Of course, purses are bigger now, but  neat to look at non-the-less.  The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises This list is updated through the 2024 RBC Heritage. To add, Scottie won 4.5 million at the Players, Jack played 44 seasons and won a little of 5 million on course.
