I just want to say that over the last few weeks it's taken all my will power to dig deep and try to bring out my inner Stupid Monkey. Stephan has me doing drills that are very uncomfortable and it's taking a lot of concentration to not let myself go back to old ingrained patterns when I start hitting bad shots. My tendency is to either anlayze the heck out of why I'm doing and/or start switching to some other drill learned in the past that yields a faster result. It's really freaking hard to resist doing that, but....i.......must.....be.....strong.......

SIMPLIFY!!!!

Hey at the very least these drills feel uncomfortable... means that you are doing something other than what your used to.. sooooo.. it's a great thing!!

Swing Update:

I went out to the range a couple of times--weather is finally improving! :)

Good News:

- The last 2 times I've been to the range I'm consistently (~85%) hitting a nice small draw!!! Another 10% were small right pushes that weren't too far off my target and would more then likely have still been playable. On the pushes, when I stop and strengthen my grip a bit, they went back to a draw. The other 5% were pretty much either "unplayable" right pushes with a very rare hook.

The Bad News:

- I've lost distance. :-( For example, where I was previously hitting my 8 iron ~130 to 135, I was only hitting it about 120.

If anyone can comment on the following I would really, really appreciate your input:

- I should not take my distance loss as an indication that I'm on the wrong path? In fact, the increased consistency and good ball flight should be encouraging? Right? I should stick with it and the distance will come back over time? I hope....

- Part of the reason for the loss in distance is that even though I'm starting to ingrain some good changes, because the changes are still new it will take time to get them in my muscle memory where I can start cranking up the speed.

- I picked up a set of used irons that are stiff shafts. I was using regular shafts before. Perhaps I need to go back to regular shafts????

Took a little "detour" recently. Here is my most recent swing with a pitching wedge. Still working on getting a good impact position.  Any comments, advice, or help with direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

I think you have to figure out now if your making as good of contact as you can now. Take a dry erase marker to the range or your home hitting mat. See where on the club face your striking the ball. You may be hitting the ball higher on the face which is causing a shorter shot.

Thanks for the suggestion. To your point, I'm absolutely not making the best contact. I took some impact tape to see where I was hitting it off the face. I'm actually hitting it a bit low, but fairly centered.

I just had an evolvr lesson returned. I need to start working on Key #4 as I'm pretty steep coming into impact.

Hi. It's not too exciting, but below are clips of myself working on a drill from my last lesson. I'm attempting to "lay down" the club shaft and then taking a chip shot at the end. Feel free to comment, advise, or philosophize. ;) BTW, I'm looking back because there's a mirror behind the camera.

I do not have any technical advice, but it appears you are practicing the right way.  Gotta change the picture....

thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Yeah, I'm just trying to ingrain the correct sequence and change the damn picture. It's not easy, but I'm working on it!

I'm still working on a drill from my evolvr lesson of lying the club down and trying to shallow out my downswing. I'm also working on getting my elbows together, which has been a big problem for me. The first clip is the drill, the second clip is myself trying to do the same thing with full speed. It looks like I'm taking the club back a little too steep on my backswing. Ball flight is improving. Last time I was out, I did the drill and was hitting a lot of left pushes. I tried doing the same drill and adding as much weight to my left as possible through the entire swing. I was then hitting draws. I'm not sure why that helped, but I was hitting some of the best shots I've ever produced. Problem remains getting that into my full swing. Lots of ingrained habits that are going to take time and work to change. As always, I'm open to any comments. Thanks!

Hi there,

Trying to work on my swing path and key #4, but would appreciate any feedback. The first part is a drill that Stephan is having me work on to help get the club shaft more in to out and shallow. Any feedback is welcomed. Thanks!!!!!

My suggestion is to listen to your pro, especially when it comes to the drills. He may be asking you to do something that is not a final result, just in order to ingrain a certain feel.

Your backswing here looks too flat to me (it looks more on-plane in your punch shots above). But again, this drill may just be a way of feeling something, not getting to a certain position.

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
