What's a general rule of tipping?

nothing set in stone. You can tip what ever you want. I have only played with a caddie 2 times. The courses were well over $100 and then + the caddie fee.  I tipped $80 my self. I think that is fair.

This is interesting, I've never played anywhere fancy enough to use a caddie.  $20 an hour seems kinda ridiculous for simply carrying a bag around but hey if that's the going rate...

Out of curiosity though, do they let you carry your own bag?  Does asking to carry your own bag get you dirty looks, etc?

When I play Oakland Hills, we have a foecaddie, 1 for the group. We have our bags on carts and he/she runs along, gives you yardages, rakes bunkers, cleans balls, reads putts, etc. It is the shizz. The vendor that takes us up there handles the tipping, so I don't know how much. I can tell you that is 1st class treatment that I could get used to very quickly.

The group is taking a caddie and a forecaddie.  This is going to be quite the experience.  My goal is to break 120. I'll report back.

Awesome!

I wouldn't go in with any expectation of score. Take what the course will give you and enjoy the day.

As someone else mentioned, think about all the hacks that these skilled golfers have played with throughout their golf careers... you are likely not even in the bottom 50%. Keep pace and the wont even notice.

I'd also recommend teeing it forward. Nobody will respect you any less dude, it's golf.

Just play your game that you have been playing and don't make it look like you are trying to impress them. In the end, you will try to pull off some miracle shot and it will fail; and then they will all see what you are trying to do. Just have fun, play smart and more importantly ENJOY OAK HILL.

We must harness the crystiles.

Just reporting back.  Had a GREAT time and it was an amazing experience.  As far as the golf, it was the worst I've played in 3 years and it had absolutely nothing to do with the actual course.  I think I was just mentally psyched out to be there and I forgot how to hit the golf ball.  I topped more balls in one round than I have since I started playing golf.  Definitely some embarrassing moments, but I shook it off and didn't let myself get angry. I just tried to enjoy the day.  I've never experienced rough like that.  So lush and thick.

So weird though.  My swing felt completely foreign to me, and I just couldn't figure it out all day.  What a track and what a clubhouse!!  Great memory of playing with my dad, so that's awesome.

Very cool! Glad you decided to go. Playing a course like that gives you a different appreciation for type of courses that pros play. The first time I played Oakland Hills, I shot 90, but haven't been close to that number since. I'll have another go here in a few weeks. I'll be walking the grounds of Murifield Village next week, but haven't been able to play it yet. I would give my left one for a round there.

    • I am a huge numbers guy and if a number can be applied to something, I want to know what it is.  Even in golf, I will pace off short chips as I have a 10 yard, 20 yard, and 30 yard shot whereas I take the club back a certain distance for each.  I have heard the comparison to basketball players that they do not know their exact distance to the basket, they just use their eye sight and adjust which I know a lot of golfers do as well when within a certain distance to the pin.  My question is, what is that distance for you?  I was at the range today and was hitting wayward  balls to a flag that I had no idea what it's exact distance was, I estimate that I was at times as close as 40 yards and as far away as 70 yards.  I was amazed at how accurate I was having not known the distance to the flag.  Temps me to not use my range finder within say 70 yards and go by look and feel.  What say you?
    • Well, it was yesterday but I shot an 88 at Lake Park GC in Lewisville, TX.
    • PXG Orlando, other locations I'm sure its the same, offers a full bag fitting for 25 bucks which is applied to purchase if you are a veteran or active duty, etc. Unfortunately I like my Titleist's.
    • Latest rumor is Clarkson, May and Hammond will have a new team on LIV.
    • That's not just sandbagging, that's cheating. Under Rule 3.3 for posting most likely scores, for example if there was a 2 foot putt for par, one can only take one extra stroke from what they lie, meaning par in that instance, not bogey. I didn't check the other instances but you can.
