I've been Playing Golf for: I played for around 6 years during junior high and high school. I took around ten years off and have just picked the game back up about 3 weeks ago.

My current handicap index or average score is: I'm shooting in the +20-25 range currently

My typical ball flight is: Draw

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Ball striking is not very consistent. I top/thin some tee shots and can hit my longer irons pretty fat.

Hi welcome to the site. You contact issues stem from your head/upper body drifting to the right on the backswing.  You're going to feel more left side bend (explained more in the video). Check out the difference in the tilt of the shoulders on the takeaway, your shoulder are too level.

This lateral move was my problem when I was playing years ago as well. Is this mostly going to be something I fix through feels alone, or are there any good drills to work on? Sometimes I feel like I get zero weight shift to my right foot when I make a centered turn, and I think this is why I'm moving so much.

Stick with the feels and film multiple swings to confirm. If the head is still moving, feel it more.

Will probably feel like you "shift" less into your right foot, might even feel like you're slightly left. It's a feel and not what is actually happening. "Loading" into your right side, translating right, doesn't add anything to your swing, just makes solid contact harder to achieve.

Went to the range last night and worked on keeping my vision very centered over the ball on my turn, and it was very successful. I was striking the ball very consistently throughout the bag. I'll get some video next week. Found that my range has a very nice putting green and worked on that for a while as well, also with good results.

I haven't gotten a chance to video anymore swings. I'm waiting on the upcoming wedding to get a camera! I'm still struggling with contact, but not as bad. The vast majority of my misses are thin and off the toe. Looking through my video and at other swings I'm noticing that I tend to push the butt of the club back and the start of my swing. My arms seem to get really far away from my body, and I think that this is a factor in my swaying motion. Next time at the range I'm going to try and feel my left arm closer to my chest at takeaway, and see if that helps.

Got a new iPhone and a gorilla pod, so I'm able to video at my convenience now. I am just now getting back into the swing of it this season, didn't play any throughout the winter. I've probably played 36 holes over the last month or so, with just a few practice sessions.

Still showing some contact issues. Ball flight is a draw. My misses with my irons are thin or off the toe (short). My driver is giving my the most difficulty, with my miss being a big push/fade. Priority piece is still Key #1. Trying to increase my shoulder tilt on the back swing. Trying to feel pressure on my left foot and extension through the right side. I use Mike's centered turn drill for practice swings, trying to really feel the bend in my left knee/pressure in the left foot.

I don't think the swing looks a lot different from last year. Still struggling to keep my head still. These are 7-iron swings.

Thanks man. So far I've been playing pretty well, and missing shots doesn't fluster me like it did when I was playing competitively. If I could get off the tee with more accuracy, I really think I could post some decent scores.

Just saw @saevel25 referring to this 5 keys video and thought I'd have a look at impact for myself. I have a lot of flip past impact, and thought this could be a result of not turning through impact enough. [VIDEO]http://youtu.be/iD0b6wDS_WE[/VIDEO] At impact it look like my hips have cleared some, but my shoulders are still quite square (maybe even closed) to the target. This could be a good drill for me.

It's tough to say which way you should go on this one. I agree that your body stalls out and doesn't keep up your pivot rates on the late downswing and follow-through, but… If you look at your backswing, you never gain much depth. So I imagine that a big part of the stalling is your body's way of trying to not swing too far left. You're doing all you can to try to lay the shaft down and deliver the clubhead to the ball a bit from the inside and not wipe across it, and part of that involves stalling the body so you don't turn left too much.

I'd work on gaining more depth with the backswing first.

Please list an approximate handicap index. If you're a 2 the advice is different than if you're a 12 or a 22.

So a deeper backswing, one where may hands travel a bit more to the inside, would allow for more body pivot left, as the club is already on a more inside/out plane if I achieve a deeper backswing. Am I understanding that correctly? Approximate handicap is 18-20 I will add it above.

So here I want to be feeling that may hands stay much closer to my legs and more pressure in my armpits getting to A2. It doesn't seem like I have a strong tendency to roll the club open and under the plane line, so if I can maintain that and keep my hands closer to my body, I can achieve a deeper and on plane backswing.

Yes, make swings with a tee or glove in your left armpit.

Notice the lack of space between the upper part of the left arm and the side of the pec with these guys. Then look at your A2.

    • The Most Common Swing Flaw
      I'm sure there will be arguments later but there is one piece of information I think a lot of golfers can benefit from. I hope to save some people from buying the online swing tip scams. The most common flaw I see in swings is rotating the forearms one way or the other. Most people don't realize you don't have to rotate your forearms or hands at all in the golf swing, in fact it's better if you don't. The arms can stay just as square as they are at address. The arms follow the rotation of the shoulders on the plane. The arms slightly trail the body on the through swing, creating some additional lag to hip lag, and then eventually they pass the body much later. The club face can stay as square as it was at impact the whole time, many PGA  pros do this. Hunter Mahan is a good example. The only movement the arms really have to make is an up and down one. There is a popular drill where students are told to pick the club straight up from address, hinge it, and rest it on their right shoulder (for righties), and then turn the shoulders 90 degrees and voila, the top of the backswing. To get to this position people will do all kinds of arm and hand contortions all over the place, which is fine. The only problem is, is on the way down, you don't want to be doing these things, and the law of physics states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, so you will likely do going down what you did going up, just in reverse. All you really have to do is rotate your shoulders and let the arms stay connected as they were at address, after all this is why you've spent so much time working on the set up position! The swing is a moving and rotating set up position. Some people actually get to the top perfectly, but then insist on going way beyond parallel, ruining the glorious work! The problem here is, the more your arms lift past your shoulders, the more you have to wait for them to come down, for that huge 1mph arm swing speed boost.  You're of course thinking, why the heck do people do all these things? One reason people do this is because it feels natural, at least that's the reason experienced golfers do it. It feels more repeatable to them, and they like it, it feels good. Power to them. But there are plenty of golfers who do these things that aren't happy with their game, so why do they do it? They do these things because it feels like they can get maximum strength this way. Doing it the efficient way would cost them a lot of power, because their strongest and biggest muscles have not coordinated yet to hit a golf ball. When we do basic things like jumping and lifting, things we've done all our lives, we use the most efficient muscles and most supported ones. But when we have to hit a golf ball, those muscles don't know how to get involved, so we use the smaller, weaker, faster ones, to get the job done with some short term speed. The truth is, we can hit the ball a lot further using the right muscles, but many golfers believe they are hitting it better with whatever move they currently have. They aren't wrong, at the moment they can't hit it with the right muscles, because the right muscles aren't trained. But if they stopped what they are doing and started training the right muscles to support the swing, would they hit it better, faster farther? You bet your ball washer they would. So put down the club, put your arms across your chest like you learned at your very first golf clinic, dig into your hip sockets, and rotate those shoulders. Do away with the crazy arm motions and the bending and unbending at the waist. The 4some behind you will thank you for it.

      Certainly. Only keep a record of pars in my notebook - nothing else, consequently my index could be anywhere between 16 and 36. Aim is to par every hole on the course at some stage.

      thanks @ColinL great answer. Question: Are there any times where you can take an unplayable if you can't identify your ball, like if you can't get close enough to read the letters. I thought there were.

      Casual water is an abnormal ground condition (AGC).   The idea behind getting free relief from it is that it is considered “abnormal” i.e. not a normal condition you are expected to play from.   In the same way,  an obstruction being by definition an artificial obect,  is not a natural feature of a golf course and so you get free relief from interference by one. in both cases, the relief is available even if you don’t find your ball which you would think reasonable if you knew perfectly well that your ball had gone into a large patch of casual water and disappeared from sight.   A tree, on the other hand is a natural feature of the course and you get no favours if you put your ball up against one or in it: you have to play the ball as it lies.  If it’s in the tree, you don’t have to retrieve it in order to deem it unplayable, but you do have to identify it as yours.
