Anyone look at NBC's science of golf website? It's got some great slow motion shots

I've been watching the GC stream, not the tv broadcast and there are these clips that come on just before getting back to the action that sound pretty interesting.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

Yah, I stumbled on them recently and just watched a few. I'm torn. I think the quality is good, and there are some nuggets of good info there.

This one above on putting, for example. It seems scientifically pretty good. There's a tease about a cool camera that takes 10,000fps. There's analysis of potential energy, kinetic energy, sound energy, heat, work, power.... but at the end, you don't see much practical application of any of it.

I love science, and I love attempts to make it more accessible to people. I'm scratching my head with all of the golf stuff here, because it's such high quality production and I'm left with the thought of "so what? how does this help me?"

Much of it seems to be along the lines of that smart people are working hard on figuring out how scientific principles apply to golf, but we are just going to tease you with how cool they are and not show you any actual results.  The segment on golf course pace of play was definitely like that. I was hoping to see what efforts are being taken, but you just see that they're using GPS to track how people play on courses to get data as they build models. And someday, we may see some tangible results. Great! Who'd have thunk it?

I visit that site regularly. Has some decent info available. I especially liked their info on how handicaps are figured, and used. I had never heard of that "bonus of excellence" term before reading about it in their transcript.

Pretty nice explanations. There was only one snippet (Potential and Kinetic Energy 3:02-3:24) that showed backward deflection on a driver shaft at impact. I wonder if there is any situation where this could happen with a human swinging the ball?

    • You might want to try a can of Bar Keepers Friend. Yes, it is abrasive, so just wet a sponge and dab it on. It has oxalic acid (no bleach like "Comet" kitchen cleanser), and it works wonders on stainless steel and other metals. Try it on a small area first to see what happens.
    • Fair   My uneducated thought: the big miss is the penalty area. If you want to optimize score, missing into the bunker (likely 5) is better than missing right into the penalty (possible 6). With that, your strategy seems sound and if you hit a committed shot, you get a bunker 5% of the time, take your medicine and hopefully get a putt for par but accept bogey. You may find yourself in a penalty situation 2-3% of the time and accept the associated outcome. The vast majority of the time though you are giving yourself a good approach shot into the green.
    • I walk 30 mins a day on my lunch break. It is not very intense (since i dont want to get sweaty in my work clothes), so just a touch above leisurely. 3 days a week I walk on the treadmill for 60 mins. I alternate the incline from 4 to 10 for a couple minutes, once every ten minutes. I lift my kettlebells nearly everyday. I have a couple complex routines. I find just 15 minutes and my heart rates is elevated
