Mid to Long Irons continue to elude me...(why did this "trick" work?)

I am fine with everything about my game right now...except for 8iron to 4iron. I cannot stay consistent with those clubs in any way. I just can't seem to square that face up. I've been tweeking things here and there based on different things I've read and heard. The main thing I was doing today was trying to get my weight 90% onto my lead leg on contact. I just kept getting worse and worse contact and started slicing.

For completely no reason, I just tried to play the ball like a drive (i had to try something different)....but with my 7 iron. I kept my weight way back and then transferred it to the front...but definitely nowhere near 90%. In fact I didn't even think too much about getting the weight to the front at all. And wouldn't you know it, beautiful shots. I just don't get it, why would that work?

Is my swing path so far off that something I probably shouldn't be doing works?

Maybe I should reiterate about one thing, I say I was in drive position and then transferred my weight to the front. That's what I tried to do anyway, I'd say I was still feeling more around 50/50 at impact. But it just worked so well.

  • 2 weeks later...

Long Irons for me is one swing thought."stay back and release through"

Then finish with weight forward.

Don't know what I actually do but if I feel like i get to the front early I get a big fade

Yeah I keep my weight pretty even when I hit my irons and I seem to hit them nice and straight for the most part.  I might lean back ever so slightly with a 3 or 4 iron to help get it up in the air but those are the only clubs I do that with.

You're probably spinning out trying to get to your left so much.

I'd guess the same thing. @Crim , update your swing thread with new video. It will be much easier to diagnose, rather than to speculate.

    • Day 113: 4/18/24 Stack training progress check after finishing my 6th program, and 4th Full Speed Spectrum Training session, which is recommended for my next program.     Gained 1 mph with driver, 195 g, 95g. Maintained with 280 g , and gained 2 with 145 g. Lost 1 mph on both lead and trail arm. Felt like I lost distance in my last round…
    • Please forgive the sweaty shirt.  Just got off the treadmill and decided to do my Evolvr drill.
    • I'd agree that 4w seems like the right play here. I'm not a course designer or anything but that hole looks like it could be so much more fun if everyone played from those front 2 tee boxes that are right outside your shot cone and they cut down most of the trees down that left side of the fairway. That would give risk reward to long hitters who want to try and push it up to that left fairway, allow more players to reach that second fairway, and still allowing it to be perfectly playable for someone who only hits driver like 150yds off the tee.   Yeah it looks like 4iron aimed at that inside edge of the right bunker is the play there, especially if you don't expect a 20mph tailwind again. If it is down wind again, 5iron would be just fine too, it'd still get you inside 150yds for your approach.  Keep in mind tee marker locations too, you measured that one from the back so if those tee markers are moved all the way towards the front of that box then 5 iron is probably best just to be sure that right bunker is never in play.
    • Day 1: worked on my drill for my arms.
    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
