I wanted to share with everyone that a special month is about to start!

It is the month of Ramadan!

What is it? - This is the month where Muslims are required to fast from the moment there is a sliver of light in the am (Dawn) until the time the sun is gone from the horizon (i.e. Dusk)!

What is Fasting? - It is abstaining from food , drink, relations with ones wife, and anything else considered obscene in terms of words or actions.

Why do they do it? - Because it is a pillar of Islam that must be completed by all mature (of age & mentally aware) and healthy (i.e. no medical excuse not to) men and women.

Are there any benefits? - Besides the medical benefits of abstaining from food and drink, it helps people understand what many others are experiencing on a daily basis in terms of hunger and thirst.. It puts people in the shoes of others and you are encouraged to give charity during the month and after.  It brings many family's together for food and drink, and it challenges the people to really be aware of their actions all the time. (i.e. if you do not abstain from bad mouthing people for example, then all you get out of it is being hungry and thirsty)

There is one extremely special night called the "night of power" and in it the Quran was first reveled, and the reward of worship during this night is multiplied by 1,000 months (i.e. 83.3 years)

After the month is over there are 3 days of festivities where the kids are given money or gifts & parties are held because of all the efforts put in the month!

The first of this month is this upcoming Saturday or Sunday & will continue for 29/30 days depending on the new moon sightings.  I will not be able to really play much during this month (if at all), but I think I might just continue working on my swing if I find some free time.

Thanks Everyone!

Thanks for posting @Abu3baid .  I find it interesting how it moves around the calendar year.  What indicates the start date and can it be in every calendar month at some point?

Yes, that is true.. It is good and bad depending on what time of year it is... Obviously since it is moving the time that the sun comes up and the sun comes down is also moving as well..

For example, 5 years ago it was probably in September which means that we were breaking our fast at around 5 pm or so.. This year since it is going to be in July we will be breaking our fast around 7 or so for a while..  In Mass I remember loving having it in the winter months.. now they have to go through it in the summer time..

On a side note.. The people that have it the toughest are the ones living in areas where it is not really dark at all except between 4 & 5 hours every 24.. I don't envy them :)  .. then again I'm sure they get rewarded a lot for all the patience they must endure to go through it that long every day!

It's a lunar calendar and they don't make any adjustment to it, so doesn't sync up with the solar year, unlike the Jewish or Chinese lunar calendars.

  • 1 month later...
The month of a Ramadan is officially over and I am back on the wagon starting in the morning! We have a full week of national holiday as well! I will miss the 10 - 4 work schedule, but I will miss Ramadan more, what a great month it was! I will record my swing to start with evolvr again, and I purchased yarn and a needle to test my direction control and speed on the green! Alhamdulillah

Marhaba Abu3baid!

Things are returning to normal here in the Eastern province as well.  Our construction contractor had some ambitious plans for Ramadan, but quickly came to the realization that getting anything done with the fatigue, the 6 hour work day and oppressive heat was unrealistic.

All of the restaraunts are open again, so the choices for lunch are available again.  Some of the things i'll miss are the absence of traffic on the roads, the 10 minute wait to get across the causeway into Bahrain (as opposed to 2-3 hours), and the general relaxed nature of the work place in the afternoons.

Masalama habibi!

Thank you my friend! Yeah, this is one of the things I don't really like, which is the lack of production during the holy month! I can excuse it in terms of building, but when someone is working in an office? Just baffles me really! I'm getting used to it though. I am going back to the states in less than a month, so unfortunately I want be able to come down to Dammam at all until after, we are opening up a sterile mfg plant wrist should e operational soon, and I will have to come down to sort out the details for our product costing! They deal with huge margins I know, but in the bidding industry it is competitive! I heard they are making the crossing into Bahrain to require a pre approves visa, is this true or just everyone except Americans? I have yet tot go, but i don't want them to give me a hard time! Masalama,. Your learning Arabic too!

Of course, I have a few good friends who are Muslim. We just don't talk about our differences, and we're good. ;-) Fast well!

    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
    • I agree with @klineka, you're clearly doing something right.  Its always going to be a bit of a guessing game if you don't have any scoring history.  On the other hand, understanding that it takes only 54 holes to establish an actual handicap, and they have about 6 weeks in which to play and post enough scores, I don't think its at all unreasonable to require them to have an official handicap before they become eligible for prizes.  I don't know how you structure the fees for the series of competitions, but if its possible they'll play with the group without being eligible for prizes, you could consider a way to let them do that without contributing to the prize pool.
    • I run tournaments and want to put in a local rule that allows relief from tree roots and rocks that are not loose impediments. We have some really terrible lies in some of our courses in my area and nobody is getting paid enough to break clubs. Let me know if you think the verbage for this rule makes sense. Local Rule Roots and Rocks You may move your ball from a tree root or buried rock one club length for free relief no closer to the hole. However you may not use this rule to get relief from a tree, bush, boulder, or other foliage hindering your swing. Your only option here is to play it as it lies or take an unplayable for a one stroke penalty.
    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
