New Evolvr drill with an alignment stick.  I had it going all the way to my neck, but I found that very distracting.  The idea is to help me prevent over-the-top swings.  If I have a OTT, I hit the stick.  I'll keep moving the stick closer as I get going. If it is too close, I hit it on the backswing.  My backswing is good per my instructor, so I don't want to mess with that.  I did notice that my hips are moving slightly back on the driver face on video.  I will have the keep that in mind for the next session.

Not to be outdone by @billchao 's pumpkin mat, I'm rocking a ladybug mat in the videos below. :-D

Swings look good, @boogielicious ! Those other guys don't realize the themed mats are the true secret to changing the picture ;-)

Really liking that stick drill for you @boogielicious , great progress with @sk golf .

I also like these swings, just make sure the knees/thighs come together as you do it to get the weight off the right foot.

@mvmac and @sk golf

Will this drill help with this as well as the bottle drill?

I'm slowly seeing improvement with the changes. Ball flight is getting higher. It still have some misses but the hooks are disappearing. Yesterday I played a par three course with my wife, friend and my godson. I focused on a better finish, the A8-9 part of my priority pieces. I've noticed recently that as I tighten up during a round, my finish gets shorter. So the focus was to keep the finish the same. Ball flight stayed consistently high even with the five iron. Flight was slight draw to slight fade. The most fun was working with my godson. This was his first real course play. He's done the range and another par three that has mats for tees. He did well for a first timer. On the 8th, he had a 80 yard shot. My wife had just stuck a similar shot to < 1 foot. I lined him up, put the ball at the right point in his stance. He stuck it to 1 foot! Who's your caddie?!

Here are a few of practice videos with sand shots. I notice while filming that I was standing more like a full swing shot, so I emphasized getting my body more in the proper sand shot stance. My stance is not very wide. When I get it wider, I tend to have more mishits.

This first video is with a 58-12 wedges. I'm about 10 yards from the pin with maybe 4 yards of green to work with. I seem to have more trouble with the higher lofted wedge either with not taking enough sand or hitting it thin.

The second video is with a 54-14. I have better success with this club and a 52-14 if I carry that. These shots felt much better and were much closer.

I'd concentrate on two things:

  • Spread your feet more, bend your knees more, and get a bit lower. This will expose more bounce. You don't need to or want to be so tall in the bunker.
  • I like the soft arms in the follow through, but I don't love them rolling over each other. The arms should stay soft and even collapse slightly while the face stays pointed toward the sky. So… not the picture below.

Attached are a couple of videos I submitted for my Evolvr lesson. In the DTL video I am working on the feel of getting my hands further out at A5. If they are too far back at A5, my right elbow gets stuck, my shaft steep and the swing goes over the top. The first swing was better than the second, but overall the feel works well.

For the face on, I am working on the centered hip turn. The feel is getting my right pocket to move towards the target at A4 so my hips and swing center don't sway back. I am also working on getting the knees to close more from A5 to A8 to help the weight shift forward. I am still struggling with that. My right foot is still planted past A5.

Finally getting back to outdoor practice video. I sent in my first videos for Evolvr in a couple of months. I will be posting some practice videos here soon.

I played 9 on my birthday and the course was in great shape. I made good contact for the most part, which felt good. Shot a 44. I did have one hole with a triple due to a bad hook off the tee OB.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
