This would drive me insane!!!! ...and is the only reason I would approve of concealed carry on a course!!!

You beat me to it! A jury of my peers (12 golfers) would never convict me for offing them. :)

I like them sometimes.

I used to like them more because my boss would call me every so often and say, "Bring your clubs tomorrow.  We're playing a tournament."

I LOVED scrambles when I was playing them on the clock.  lol

Now I work for the county and that doesn't happen anymore.  :(

Well I can see some advantages of a scramble now, but there still not for me! But those of you who say you like them because your doing it in work time!!... That's not fair! It doesn't even count! I'd probably enjoy salsa dancing on company time!

I would have figured scrambles would have been big among County, State, and Federal workers. Every time I see any government workers there is one guy working (or at least holding a tool) and 3 watching.

Well tomorrow is the day of my first ever scramble! I was asked to join a team, it meant a day off work and it's a course I've never played before, for those reasons alone I'm looking forward to it! It's also my friends/team mate first scramble, I explained the process to him, and he thought it was as ridiculous as I did! But the forecast is nice and it's a freebie so it was hard to say no! I'm curious as to wether my thoughts on this way of playing will change in any way? I'll let you all know!

It's not a real round of golf, but it beats working, you hit some good shots, drink a few beers, and have some yucks with your friends.  There are worse ways to spend the day.  And you'll end up trying all kinds of shots you never would hit in a normal round of golf.  Sure I can duck hook this 4-iron around the tree, over the water and off the cart path onto the green.  Nothing but net!

Try it. You'll like it.

I hate the "Magic String".

There used to be (maybe still is by a different name of course) an Oldsmobile Scramble that teams qualify for a national sramble. I think it was played ay Bay Hill in Orlando. Roll your own teams. Talk about some low scores. Winner made big bucks.

I too hate it when you have to buy string in order to have a chance to win.

That pretty well sums it up, at least for me.  Scrambles are fun and a great way to introduce new golfers to the game, or include people who only play a couple rounds a year.  I've played in 2-3 charity scrambles a year for the last 25 years and always have a good time.  We never have any expectations of winning because usually the winners are the biggest liars, but it's always a fun day nonetheless.  I can think of a lot of worse ways to spend the day than being on the golf course with a group of friends, talking trash and having a few beers.  I have a hard time classifying any kind of golf as the "worst form of golf" because I enjoy being out on the course no matter what.

I run one & have to play in a few others every year ... hate scrambles.   It gets me off my game & forces me to hit harder than I would otherwise.    Other than the social aspect, nothing much redeeming about them ...

I concur too.  As they say (and so do I) "my worst day on the golf course is better than my best day at work".

Really?  If that's the case then your focus must be pretty poor.  The only change I've ever made in my game for a scramble is in sometimes taking a more risky shot than normal when we know we have a shot in the "safe" zone.  It certainly doesn't change my swing any, and it doesn't make me stupid the next time I'm playing my own ball.  It shouldn't have any more of a negative effect than trying different things on the range would have.

Scramble is awesome. As others have said its a great way for non-golfers to get out on the course - especially for retreats, bach parties, team building for work, etc. When i was a kid the scramble tournaments were always my favorite because I had a knack for hitting the ball straight...now if i could just get that back:)

    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).
