This hasn't been posted here yet?  I couldn't find it anywhere. A really interesting OTL story on the addiction of golf.  I know a lot of people here are going to poo-poo it being a real addiction, but I've seen it first hand with my own father and it really can be.  Either way, it's a very interesting piece.

I saw that on ESPN, saved it, and really looked forward to watching it. But watching it, it almost came off like a parody video. I don't know, the tone of it struck me as weird.

I voted No because I straight up tell my wife where I'm going and what I'm doing, and I really don't think golf is having anything but positive impacts on my life as a whole.

I agree.  The video seemed like a real stretch to me, and the fact that they managed to find one guy that figures he had let golf ruin his life certainly proves no significant point from my perspective.  The black dude they started out with really only sounded like a guy that had found a game he loves and is trying to play when he can.  And I couldn't decide whether to laugh or be offended by the interview piece with his wife talking about realizing how deeply hooked he was when he got clubs fitted.

I'm surprised they didn't mention that addicts read golf forums on the internet instead of looking at porn.  Sheesh... :doh:

Some years ago my wife brought it to my attention that I had a $20K bass boat sitting in the garage that had not seen a lake in something like 3-4 years. However, as she pointed out again, I had not missed a week of golfing during that same period of time. Then there was also the home made short game practice area in the back yard, complete with a putting green and silica sand bunker. The full swing area with netting was a thing of beauty. it really sank in when she showed me that all  the fishing gear in the garage that went with the bass boat was buried under plastic crates of golf accessories.

After listening to her words of wisdom I had to admit she was right. I was addicted to golf. So, I did the only self help cure for my addiction I could come up with. I gave away the boat, and most of my fishing gear to one of my son in laws. :beer:

I laughed when I saw that, because it shows just how out of it the producer of the video is. Anyone who plays golf would realize what an absurd statement that was from the lady.

That line needed to stay, whether the producer of the video was Arnold Palmer himself. It was very descriptive in indicating just how detached his wife is from this whole golf thing and makes it very clear that -- at this point, anyway -- she has no interest in partaking in her husband's obsession. Not including it would've been a huge mistake on the part of the producer, not the other way around.

Not addicted, just an avid golfer (at least on weekends).  I have been addicted (cigarettes) and that was a whole different arena.

Exactly.

I play golf as often as 5 days a week, but I shove at least a can of dip into my lip ever single day, and have done so every day since 1980. There's just no comparison.

Golf is not an addiction.

I used to be addicted to golf but seem to be slowly kicking the habit.

When I was a club member I played at least one or two rounds every work day and whatever I could get in from daylight to dark on off days.

Well plus a few extra holes using the lights on my golf cart.

Now I'm only averaging about 1 1/2 rounds a week and catch myself wondering if I want to play at all some weeks.

      I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

      Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
