This week marks the 37th event of the 2013-14 PGA Tour season, as players head to Royal Montreal Golf Club for the RBC Canadian Open.

http://www.golfchannel.com/news/fantasy-central/expert-picks-2014-rbc-canadian-open/

Rex Hoggard

Group 1: Jim Furyk : The veteran is playing some of his best golf in years and has a stellar record at the Canadian Open, including back-to-back victories in 2006 and ’07 and he tied for ninth place last year.

Group 2: Ben Crane : Make this a karma pick. After schlepping all the way to England from Oregon as the first alternate at last week’s Open Championship, Crane found himself headed home on Friday morning. The golf gods may owe him one.

Group 3: William McGirt: He was solid in his last start (T-23 at the John Deere Classic ) and he finished runner-up each of the last two years at the Canadian Open.

Group 4: Patrick Rodgers: The young professional continues his quest for a PGA Tour card but he is running out of time. After Canada he will only have two more events to secure his status.

Will Gray

Group 1: Jim Furyk: A banner year continued last week, as Furyk finished solo fourth at Royal Liverpool. Now with his berth on the U.S. Ryder Cup squad secure, the veteran returns to an event where he went back-to-back with wins in 2006 and 2007.

Group 2: David Hearn : Many expect Graham DeLaet to be the top Canadian threat at Royal Montreal, but Hearn contended at TPC Sawgrass earlier this season and notched a solid T-32 finish at the Open after making the field as an alternate. He has the tee-to-green game to contend this week.

Group 3: Chad Campbell : Believe it or not, the veteran leads the Tour in GIR percentage this season, and Campbell comes off a T-13 finish at the John Deere Classic. It was his second top-15 result in his last three starts, and Campbell cracked the top 25 two of the last three years in Canada.

Group 4: Patrick Rodgers: Rodgers received some deserved hype when he turned pro out of Stanford, but outside of an opening 65 at TPC Deere Run he has yet play to his potential. That may change this week in Canada, and amid a watered-down Group 4 he is a great option with high potential.

John Antonini

Group 1: Matt Kuchar : He leads the PGA Tour in top-10 finishes in 2013-14 and I fully expect him to get to double digits this week at Royal Montreal. He was T-2 a year ago and T-4 in 2010, although neither were held that the course they're playing this season.

Group 2: Hunter Mahan : If fate plays a hand in wins and losses, Mahan should do well this week. A veteran of the 2007 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal, he was also the 36-hole leader of the Canadian Open a year ago before withdrawing due to the birth of his first child, Zoe.

Group 3: Aaron Baddeley : The Aussie was T-9 at Glen Abbey a year ago and has been playing well on the PGA Tour this summer with a T-4 in Connecticut in his last start. One of the Tour's better putters, he should have some fun on Royal Montreal's greens but he has to get there in regulation, a stat he has struggling in this season.

Group 4: Woody Austin : He earned the nickname “Aquaman” during the 2007 Presidents Cup when he fell into a lake by the 14 th hole at Royal Montreal. Austin should have the fans by his side this week.

I've always liked this event. Good history, field and course. Mike needs a good tourney to secure a card for next year, but has been playing poorly. Lets hope he can have a good week. Jim Furyk has been absolutely killing if this year. It seems like every week he's in the Top 10. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he took this. I think Deleat and Hearn will play well, as well as Mahan, who I think WD'd last year to see his wife give birth.

Wow Nick Watney with his first good round in like 40 years lol...he went to my rival high school and his sister was insanely hot (I think she does some MLB show on TV).

Do you know/remember who Heidi Watney is @Golfingdad ?

I typed in Heidi Watney into google and the first word that google added to it was "hot."

They're cousins. She used to be the Red Sox sideline reporter, now she's at MLB Network.

Camera got confiscated. :-( Bouncing back and forth between Furyk's group and my man Gmac. First impressions: Kuchar has one of the strongest grips I've ever seen. Gmac tees his driver really low. He should try hitting up on the driver. ;-) This is AWESOME POSSUM!!!

Yup, I remember him saying that he's been doing this since he was a kid.

Kuchar, McDowell, DeLeat, and Furyk all in the top 10 on the leaderboard right now. Hopefully it stays like this through Sunday!

Thought Schwartzel was up there, too?

I think it's safe to say if G-Mac doesn't make the team on points, he's as solid a lock as it gets for a captain's pick.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
