Rickie Fowler, baby! :-D I did hedge my bets a little and back Tiger in one of the later questions for the staff predictions. Might have to email @mchepp and get him to change some things.

I won't write it until Monday night so changes are welcome. It may be that I have to change one of the questions if he doesn't play next week.

I finally saw the video. Looks bad but not career ending but I'm certainly no doctor. Just take the year off. Come back around Torrey Pines.

My dad and I agreed, Tiger should just retire with dignity and the rest of his millions of dollars...

What happened to J.B. Holmes though, I couldn't find him anywhere in the leaderboard after some time?

Did J.B. Holmes also retire form tournament, was he sick with flu or something?

Your dad and you are apparently living in some weird alternate universe or something.

That or you know a helluva lot more about Tiger's condition than Tiger or his doctors at this point.

hehheh lighten up man...

I certainly have to say that Tiger's golf game seemingly has NOT bounced back.

This injury only confirmed my doubts I had about Tiger.

He's gotta get a workable golf swing that he can actually learn, and use on the golf course.

Also workable and effective swing with regards to the driver.

I mean seriously... the guy is just tearing up his body making one driver shot... How can you ever win a major like that anymore.

He's not gonna get picked for Ryder cup either, too much baggage to carry for the rest of the team I reckon.

His game hasn't bounced back?

You do realize that he led the PGA tour money list last year while only participating in 16 events don't you?  I'm not saying he's anything near his old self but he's not that far removed from playing good golf.  Not amazing unheard of golf, but good golf.

What I find amazing is that Faldo said Graham DeLaet had the same back surgery as Tiger and DeLaet missed something like 10-11 months. Tiger came back in 11 weeks. I know everybody's different, but that's quite the dramatic difference in time table between those two guys.

DeLeat: chipping and putting after three months. Returned to competition after six months. Deemed he came back too soon, and took another four-five months off after that.

Tiger back in eleven weeks.

I really hope it's just a spasm, and he did say it felt like it was in a different spot than where he had the surgery, but if it's not a spasm and this is related, then this raises some eyebrows I guess in his decision making.

Yea, this did cross my mind at one point as well.

And I know he's rich and was only, what, nine holes away from a pay check? It seems unlikely, but certainly possible.

I would like to think you're aware that the decision to return was based on medical evaluation of his situation, not just his desire to play competitive golf.

Too bad about Tiger's  newest injury. Hopefully it's not a big deal, and he will be back, healthy, in the not so near future. Tiger supporters should not go into personal ruins over this. Besides, the NFL Pre-Season starts tonight on NBC.

I'd like to give Woods the benefit of the doubt, but at this point there is plenty of evidence that brings into question his judgement.  One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result.  The cycle of injury/comeback, injury/comeback is getting repetitive.  I'm neither a Tiger hater nor a Tiger fanboy, but it sure is sad to see an aging, superlative athlete coming apart.  Somebody up above said we're witnessing the end of an era, and I think that's right.

Guys, I had the same surgery as Tiger did. Had it in 1992. I think I know a little bit about how this type of injury goes as time goes by. What happened with Tiger today has a high probability of being one of two things.

1) His disc herniation left him in a state of health where the two vertebrae are close enough together that you can compress the spine enough to where they touch. This causes serious inflammation and pain, and that pain radiates and disables you.

OR

2) The vertebrea are not touching at all. The issue isn't even structural. In this case what can be happening is that because Tiger had the prior injury he is now walking and maybe even standing differently. If he is the way I was he may be doing a ton of stretches to pull the verts as far apart as possible (think inversion therapy). Well, what can happen in this situation is you place new stresses on lower back muscles that have never been there before. Do it long enough and those muscles spasm. This is where the "it is in a different spot" comes to mind. Once the muscles spasm it feels like "its the entire lower back".

My bet is that it is this latter scenario in play. The good news is that this is not permanent in and of itself, and furthermore can be fixed in a few days with site injections. The bad news, if this has indeed occurred, it is a condition that tends to re occur every so often. You tend to end up looking just as Tiger looked today, and then a week or two later you are fine when everything calms down. Been there, done that, for 20 years.

There's mounting evidence that Tiger Woods is a moron.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
