Quote:

The PGA of America did not receive unanimous approval in presenting former president Bill Clinton its Distinguished Service Award in Louisville on the eve of the PGA Championship Wednesday night.

One dissenter, which ought to come as no surprise, is conservative talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh.

“This is surreal,” Limbaugh said on his show Thursday . “The guy cheats on the golf course, for one thing…I mean, of all the people. You ought to see the people on this list…People like Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. It's just one of the many things in the stack of stuff today that makes you cock your head and go, ‘what the hell is happening, and what is going on?’

To be fair, Limbaugh probably wouldn't get unanimous acceptance for a pharmaceutical award either. So it's even.

Must've been awfully slim pickings for a candidate last year.  Talk about scraping the bottom of the golf barrel.....

Maybe they're just all cigar smokers. ;-)

With the last 4 presidents golfers, that would be quite a foursome. Bush Sr., Clinton, GWB and Obama. Bush Sr. and Clinton became good friends. Wonder how that Nassau would pay out?

Only partisan hacks would have an issue with this. I don't know the criteria but Clinton was twice elected to the highest office in the land and is an avid golfer. That's easily enough to get him this award.

Ya, I agree and I'm pretty partisan, although not a hack ;). After the disaster occurring over the past 6 years, I find myself pining for ol Bill. Not as much as I pine for Reagan, mind you. Give him the award.

Only a partisan hack would admit to not knowing the criteria for the award while insisting that Clinton deserves it.

What are you just sayin? I'm saying Clinton deserves it because he was POTUS and an avid golfer. I said not one thing about his politics. I would say the same about GW Bush or his father.

From the article:

"The Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to “ outstanding individuals who display leadership and humanitarian qualities , including integrity , sportsmanship and enthusiasm for the game of golf.”

I guess, offering the benefit of the doubt, 5 out of 6 is okay, but is it good enough? I would guess the first part of the bold is factored more heavily than integrity when it says "including."

You went directly to politics when you charged partisanship for anyone that would not agree with Clinton's award, while admitting that you didn't have a clue as to the actual criteria for the award.

Honestly though, the integrity thing notwithstanding, I couldn't care less.

The OP linked to a comment by a Right Wing radio host. That's where the politics began. But then again, you felt you had to comment on my rather innocuous post.

Did you even read the link?  Limbaugh's comments made no mention of politics whatsoever.  In fact, as an avid golfer himself, he talked only about the golf and the fact that Clinton is well known to cheat at golf.  Unlike you, Limbaugh questioned the award based on his knowledge of the criteria for the award.  Interestingly, the article continued and gave additional examples that supported Limbaugh's point.

I just checked my "give a damn" radar ... nope this award that really means nothing at the end of the day, did not make my radar ... nor does anything Limbaugh has to say ... like Feinstein makes a living  talking about Tiger, Limbaugh has made a living slamming Clinton.

(For the record:  I am not a Clinton fan ... but equally I am not a Limbaugh fan)

When you guys say "cheat" do you mean in the Goldfinger sense, where he is trying to win a bet and finds ball out of his pant leg, type of stuff?  Or do you just mean that he takes mulligans and fluffs his lie when he plays casually?

And I'm going to have to agree with @MSchott on this one.

I've looked at the list of past winners and it includes known sadists (Pete Dye ;)) and Vince Gill.  What is Vince Gill known for?  A couple of good country songs, a 2 handicap, and an affair with a Christian singer.

I think maybe people who say Bill Clinton doesn't belong on that list are setting the bar articificially high for SOME reason, just don't know what that could be.

According to the article, Tiger says that he can't, ahem, count......

FWIW, as said before, I really don't care.  I just found it amusing that someone who admitted to not knowing the criteria for the award would accuse someone of partisanship if they didn't agree that an awardee was deserving.

It's Bill Clinton, it's an award, he plays golf, he is a popular guy ... he gets award and he says good things about the PGA...

It's all politics ... the award that is.

Not a big deal ... he might come in handy to raise money...

I was actually about to type pretty much the same thing. It's like famous people getting honorary degrees.

You can't really think that Limbaugh targeted Clinton because he doesn't play strictly to the rules of golf? Be honest with yourself. Every single comment he makes on his show is political. There is no way in heck he would make that comment if Bush had a similar reputation on the golf course. No fricking way and you know it.

    • It’s simple. Hook it onto the tee box of the adjacent hole. Get a GIR with your approach. Birdie hole. #5 Hook it to the adjacent fairway Hit green with next shot. Birdie hole. I call it the Bill Method.
    • I’ll have to pay attention more attention to the area when I’m there. I know the area to the left of the bunkers off the tee is fescue/native vegetation but I can’t remember what’s around the tee boxes. Something to consider still is that you can’t see the green from the tee. You can’t even see all three bunkers IIRC. So I could have a line on the drive but still not know where it ends up. I think I’d be a lot more comfortable going with driver if I played here more regularly and had a log in my head of where shots tend to end up like I do at the other county courses. I have never hit driver on this hole off the blue tees. I have done it from the gold, but the length and angle are different, and during casual rounds when I didn’t care that much about score. I’m not sure the best time to try it is the second hole of a tournament. Or at the very least, I’m uncomfortable with the idea and that’s probably enough reason not to do it. I see what you’re saying. Wind is supposed to be pushing out more to the right on Saturday, too. I could probably aim right at the bunker and not end up in it. I don’t think there’s anything near the green other than that tiny bunker that would give me trouble. Well, trouble in addition to my short game deficiencies that is. Yea, me too. All I’m thinking is get it in play, put it near the green, chip on and two putt for 5. I’ll have plenty of opportunities to use my length as an advantage later. You realize all of this theory crafting will be moot when I chunk it off the tee, right? 😆

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
