do slower swing speeds originate from casting

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I have a very slow swing speed. like 60 mph with a 6 iron slow. I'm an inshape, six foot, twentyone year old male. I should be capable of faster. I believe I have a serious casting issue. ie I tend to unhinge my wrists almost immediately at the start of the downswing. I usually make good contact but they don't go far. 140 with the 6. the casting is what is causing the severely slow SS correct? thanks.

Carrying what? A golf bag? :hmm: I carry all the time and don't have a casting issue.

My bad. Probably a typo. Casting is usually related to a bad (or non-existent) weight shift which makes it harder to achieve a flat left wrist. I'd look up some key#2 drills and see if they help.

It might. It can also add loft, because you're flipping through impact, which will also result in a loss of distance.

The most important thing here is to first understand the correct sequence in the downswing what we call the kinematic sequence. It's the order that your body parts fire and accelerate on the way down to the ball. This order should be hips, then shoulders and then arms. This basically means that you are going to leave your hands and club alone until they fire at impact. Without seeing your swing it is of course impossible for me to determine if you are in fact firing in the correct sequence.

The instinct to hit with your hands can be very strong. There are many effective drills you can do to delay your release:

The Chase the Ball Drill helps you stop chunking and hitting behind the ball by training you to get your weight through the shot.

  1. Place your golf ball in your stance just outside your front foot, so it is positioned a bit more forward of where you typically have it.
  2. Take swings and focus on hitting the ball (which is out in front of where it normally is) essentially causing your body to "chase" the ball forward. This gets your weight forward upon impact.


The Move the Angles Drill teaches you how to release your club properly at the moment of impact. Releasing the club too soon results in loss of power and control. Move the Angles Drill will show you how to maintain power and control until the last possible second.

  1. Take the club to the top of your back swing and notice the angle that you form with your rear wrist and the one that you form with your rear elbow. These angles should be close to 90 degrees. Think of these angles as your power package.
  2. To learn to move these angles with your pivot, simply leave them intact and unwind until your club shaft is parallel to the ground using your hips, back and shoulder muscles. Do this a couple of times to get the feel of moving the angles with your big muscles.
  3. After doing 2 or 3 pumps from the top of the swing, down to where your club is parallel to the ground and back up again, hit a ball without resetting yourself at address. A lot of repetition is needed here to get the feel of releasing later and at the point of impact. Soon enough, you feel yourself releasing at the ball or after and gaining power and control over your shots.





Having a good impact position is crucial as well so try the Impact Pre-Set Drill : Simply set up to the ball with a normal address position and then forward press your hands so the shaft leans forward, open your hips to the target and lift your rear heel off of the ground. Make sure to keep your head behind the ball. A common mistake is for golfers to lunge forward with their head passed the ball as they try to turn their hips and shift their weight. Start your golf swing from this impact position. Be sure to plant your rear heel on the way up to make a normal backswing and then turn your body back into proper impact alignments as fast as you can. Practice this with all of your clubs to learn correct impact alignments.

The benefits of practicing perfect impact alignments is to get your club face squarely on the back of the ball. Having the proper wieght shift and body alignments will bring your hands to the ball before the club head with a forward leaning shaft. This will result in a de-lofted club face and pressure going down into the golf ball adding an increase in distance, spin and control.

If you are right handed, make sure you are not letting your right hand dominate the down swing. If your right hand is unhinging to quickly (no lag) that can cause casting. That is one cause of casting, and there are several more. Losing the lag too early will cost you distance.

When I cast the club, I am usually trying to over power my left hand, with my right hand. Trying to get some extra club head speed, which of course does not work real well.

Concentrate on keeping your lag, and let your left hand pull the club head down. I would not worry too much about your distance, I only hit my 6i about 160, and can still scare the heck out of 80. I expect to be breaking 80  shortly with that same club distance.

A lot of things can contribute to slower swing speeds.  If you post your swing in the Members Swings section, perhaps the issue could be identified.   I could be something simple.

      Sounds like we just have a different barometer for what "bad" is. This particular case isn't about "adapting" to the new site, the controls are largely the same. The problem is they blew everything up so people can see it on their phones which dilutes the quantity of information you get get to see on your PC. Also they removed useful features like the regions to again make more space for mobile users.

      Yes, it is extremely popular among Asians of every kind here because it's a rich man's sport in Asia. Many Asians (Korean, Japanese, and large growing Chinese/Taiwanese and many other Southeast Asians) come here and find that Golf is within reach of their "class" so they sign up their kids to play. I'd say that my wife's friend is in that category, and she also convinced us to play as well. So, here I am.
    • Putting Yips
      I completely changed my own putting stroke this year.... twice. Last year I had a terrible case of the yips and was two and three putting a lot of greens - some of the two putts were on putts that were 3-4 footers resulting from chip ons. I averaged 37.8 putts per round. My back hurts when I bend over practicing putting for any length of time. I tried to fix it, but gave up after a while, decided that I needed to hit more GIRs and get closer to the pin. My putting would always be mediocre. So at Xmas I bought a long putter .... cheap $60... no one wants them anymore. I tried side-saddle and practiced in my living room. I took it to the green yesterday and I didn't like it. I changed to the "shoulder-connected method" except with my right arm fully extended and right index finger along the shaft of the putter. I hold the putter gripped over the top like they would when anchoring it to the chest. Now I just rock my shoulders and arm as a unit. Having the right arm fully extended takes my right wrist completely out of the equation and that is what was causing my putting problem. Now, neither my forearm nor the putter head is touching my body. I am making a legal stroke at the ball.  After about 15 minutes work, I was lag putting to within gimme range of the holes on the practice green. When I'd miss the mark, the four footer would still drop. Now this is with a completely new stroke, and not an anchored stroke either. I'm standing fairly upright too so it's easy on my back and I can practice for about 30 minutes every time I go to the range without dreading it. While this might not cure my scoring woes this year, if I look at last years Game Golf analysis, I could save about 3 strokes a round by going from 37.8 putts per round to 34.8.

      Facebook updates all the time for performance reasons. Read their release notes.  But never judge good usability by Facebook as they are one of the absolute worst sites out there.   Honestly?  There isn't.  Some people are still stuck in old web menus but usability has only risen in the last decade.  Are there bad sites?  Sure.  But most sites are far and away better they anytime in the past.  You just have to adapt to them.  This isn't a knock on you its how society works.  I am a user experience designer and study this a lot.   Once a person gets used to changes, going back to the old version would be impossible

      Got to the range to drop off clubs for my daughters high school coed golf team tryouts. I sure hope she can get on the team. She's about a 15HC from the men's tees, it's going to be tough. Cross fingers and Practiced my downswing transition on grass and hit much better shots on the grass range after the first few shots. I hit too thin on the course, but was able to get some serious height on the grass range. Going to practice some more on the grass range and use golf club delivery to my daughter as an excuse to spend the extra money. Also, I feel like I can really go after the ball on grass because a fat shot is not as penal on the body as on a mat.
