So we all post swings, usually full ones because they're fun and often impressive. Most of us are working on drills, either from Evolvr or some other source but rarely do we post them. I think it would be fun to have a thread where we can post a video of ourselves doing our current go-to drill. We'll be able to share feedback on how to do them and what they do for us. It would serve as a good resource for students to see what other students are working on or just to get confirmation as to whether or not we're doing them correctly. It's going to rain all week so I won't be able to post any video till the sun comes back so maybe on of y'all can start.

Priority Piece:  Laying the shaft down by A5 to be pointing at least 18 inches past ball!

I think it would be great to see others who are working on the same drills or same priority pieces as myself!

Towards the end I put a ball on the inside because it just felt like I was coming around my body too much, so I wanted to put a ball so that I would continue my path out after impact..

I have changed my practice slightly now as I am working on feeling that the club is flat by A5 pointing straight ahead.. it probably isn't really doing that, but I really have to exaggerate it a lot it seems if I want to see the picture really start to change.. I am just so used to coming around my body, I probably need to work on only coming around after impact or something.. Waiting to get suggestions from Stephan on moving forward with this piece.. a very difficult one for me, but I hope to get it down soon!

I got my feedback on the last video submitted.. I think it is a really good idea to send a video of actually doing the drill, because there is a possibility that you could be doing it wrong, or maybe there is just a better way to do it.

My priority piece has not changed.. Key# 4 - laying the shaft down between A4 to A5

What was noted about the practice is very interesting though.. I need to practice in a way that promotes the picture changing.. So, if I'm not practicing the swing the way I actually swing then it will be very difficult for the picture to ever change.. I was told to go straight up to A4 as if I'm swinging and then just stop right as I start doing the downswing, and then go very slowly to A6 so that I can start identifying the feels that might work for me..

I move around way too much in the video and it is noticeable.. even to the point that I adjust my feet  - the main take away from this is that if you are practicing slow it still means that it should be within the confines of your own swing ( I hope that makes sense, as it does to me)

The other part is to just take care in my alignments (which I knew I had issues with anyway) so that I can get correct feedback while I'm practicing.. i.e. make sure the other ball is in the correct position, don't get in a too closed of a position ect.

Anyone else here working on Key# 4?

Yeah, that was a big part of the reasoning behind the thread, providing a window of opportunity for an intervention if any of us starts doing something weird with our drills. I assumed that your closed stance was intentional. It's very pronounced and obvious, especially with the alignment stick at your feet. I setup a little closed too and am always a little surprised when I see it on video because I'm not doing it intentionally. Kind of amazing that I can lay a bright orange stick down at my feet and fail to get parallel to it. The only drill I'm doing right now is 1/4 swings (actually longer but 1/4 in terms of feel) punch shots that really let's me focus on my BS feel (straight arms and close elbows powered by the right hand) and my DS feel (exploding lead shoulder with hips pushing to target). I'm working on getting a bit more of a pause at the top, a setting feel, which allows me time and space to shift focus to the DS feel. Hybrids sound like gunshots when I get it all right.

You guys are not alone.  I actually have trouble getting a the right view on my videos sometimes because I line my camera up to a club or stick but fail to line my feet up with the stick.

  • 2 weeks later...

Priority piece:

Eliminate lateral sway of hips on back swing.

This video represents pretty much all I did last week to work on my swing and it has been the best two hours or so I've ever spent. The basketball drill shown here was suggested by my evolvr instructor, and I usually will do 10-20 backswings with it before I do anything else. At about 1:30 in the video or so, you can see that my backswing is markedly improved if anyone cares to go back to my mmoan2 swing thread and see how far I was shifting to the right on the backswing. I'm not posting here to pat myself on the back (well, maybe I am a little ;-) ), but to show how progress was made in only two weeks. I'm a big believer now in approaching golf in this manner.

I went to the range yesterday to just hit balls for the first time in maybe 10 days (I also was demoing Rocketbladez irons) and my swing thought right now is to feel like I'm trying to press a button with my left hip on the backswing. It feels like I'm shifting to the left, but video shows I'm actually pretty still in my hips laterally and with my head. That makes me very happy. I was striping the ball pretty darn well, too. Hit maybe 5 of 50 balls thin, but not grossly topped or shanks, etc., and was either overdrawing my shots or hitting them pretty straight with a slight draw. I had my 7 iron going about 160-170 on average, which is fine for me right now. I know my tendency to go left has to do with several other factors that I must address in sequence.

Something else I'd like to point out: putting the ball in front of you and making full swings is like pressing a reset button on your muscle memory for me. I think what I plan to do is drill mostly and go to the range every once in a while and film my sessions in full (not playing any time soon - it's still 105+ degrees in Phoenix anyway. Maybe in a month). I filmed my swing after returning from the range and noticed that my tendency to under-rotate my hips and tilt my spine forward excessively crept in again (though, gladly, not as pronounced). My lateral hip shift was pretty much gone, though. I cut the video into 30 second clips and imported it into my V1 golf app so I could draw lines and boxes etc. I think it's important for people making major overhauls to their swings to drill mostly, but try to make full swings occasionally to see if the changes creep into muscle memory and become routine. If you just hit balls too much, it seems like you'll never integrate the changes.

@Abu3baid This is my priority piece now - how did the above drill work out for you? I've been doing slow motion mirror work, just going from A1 to A4 and then down a A6 trying to get my right elbow to my belly button. Trying to get pitch elbow rather than punch elbow by squeezing my elbows together - which should also help prevent me bending my left arm.

Also trying to burn this into my head and also doing it as a drill - http://stephenhoult.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/hogan.gif (filesize is too big to embed properly)

It is a good drill, but you need to be very careful not to get your R shoulder going down on the downswing as well.. It is a very tough priority and it is actually still my priority.. I'm getting a little better now, but mostly because I went and saw an instructor live to compliment the evolve lessons.. Take a look at the last few posts in my swing thread and you can see what went on, I think it is a matter of feel for sure because this piece is instinctual so it won't be easy.

Here's my latest Evolvr drill: diagonal alignment rod in the ground at back hip. Turn on backswing without touching the rod. Keep head still as well. See which one I fail pretty miserably at. And enjoy the view of my rear end for the first 5 seconds. (Sorry about that).

    • This is pretty much how I look at it.  I understand there are times when the piece of mind has value. I think over the long haul I'm money ahead by never buying the extended warrantee. Hell, What do I know? I went to Ch!cago PubIic SchooIs.

    • On my car I got the extended power train warranty. I do read the fine print most of the time. Though at now 37, my eyes aren’t what they were 10 years ago.    The problem with most of these extended warranties on electronics and appliances is you don’t register the warranty with the place you buy the warranty from, which I’ve always found strange. Unless it’s GameStop then you know Alina drops her Switch in the next two years and the screen cracks they’ll replace it. No questions asked.    You buy a slow cooker at Walmart for $50 and the extended warranty is say $6, you have to go through a third party to register your product for the warranty, and it’s pretty damn annoying. Target is the same way. Anything you buy the extended protection on you have to go through a third party.    Why do retailers go through a “broker” for warranties? Because they don’t wanna deal with it? They make me talk to someone from another country, that I can barely understand, when I need my warranty fulfilled.   Sorry for the rant.
