Vij is having a hard time lately. He was easily a favorite to take home the fed ex cup trophy but now has not been able to put an under par round together. He has had like two under par rounds out of the last fifteen. What is wrong with Vijay? Is age finally catching up to him?

I think it is age as well. I have not looked at any of his stats, so I don't know if it there one specific aspect of his game that it lacking. Speaking of Vijay's 'struggles' (who I think won twice this year), DLIII has dropped off the face of the earth.

Hey, if any other 'major' sport is an indicator, Veej may as well jump on the HGH bandwagon before the Tour starts testing next year! Maybe Finchem will wake up and smell the coffee if Vijays wins 9 times again and regains # 1...

Maybe he already jumped off the HGH/steroid bandwagon earlier this year when it became apparent testing is going to begin next year. His age is probably the reason he's faltered - but his decline the last three or four months is eye opening. The guys on The Golf Channel were blaming it on Vijay tinkering with his swing. However, the specter of HGH/steroids shouldn't be ignored. I think everyone presumes someone on HGH/steroids is going to look like Barry Bonds or Mark McGwire. The fact is that stuff lets you perform for longer stretches of time and you are able to recover more quickly from exertion - thus guys can lift weights at a longer and more frequent pace; or guys can find it easier to play 6 or 7 rounds of golf each week and still feel day one fresh on Saturdays and Sundays. I think it is ignorant for tour people to think HGH/steroids isn't being abused on tour. Wouldn't it make sense for a guy in his mid-40s to start hitting the sauce so he can feel good on weekends? Can anyone look and see what Vijay's average scores are this year by round? I'd be curious if he's averaging 70 on Thursday and Friday, but is 72 on the weekends.

Guys, cut him some slack here. He just had a bad second half of the year I think. I would think twice about writing off a guy with a swing like that.

VJ is one of the hardest workers on the tour, everyone knows that. I think it could have gotten to him and now needs to take a break, but we all know that wont happen till the season is over.

He has slumped lately. But how prevelant do you guys think HGH is? Its kind of a double edged sword to make claims, because none of us have the facts to back it up. All I know is that, if I'm in as good of shape as VJ is at 44 (or however old he is), i'll be happy. Tiger just looks like a safety for the NFL, but I'd like to believe that golfers haven't stooped to HGH/steroids.
I'm only at 13 clubs in the bag, what do you reccomend as a 14th? My foot wedge?

I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt but at some point age has to catch up with him. I know he has made some swing changes recently which also most likely have hurt his scores.

I would would say age and he's not practicing as much as he used to. He could be winding down and spending more time with his family.

I think the flaw in your post comes in the last sentence. I am not an expert on steriods but in my late 30's early 40's I got into lifting weights big time and wanted to grow. So I looked into steroids and my research found that taking them in your 40's is not going to present any real advanatges. I cannot remember the details but it was clearly evident that they would not help.

Anyway I think that he is working on a swing change as it is apparent if you watch him swing over the last couple of weeks. I think VJ is trying to add a consistent draw to his game. Not sure why but my question to him would be why now at the end of the season unless he felt he had no chance to win the FED EX Cup???

he played great early in the year, hes just had injuries that have likely influenced his practice time. Maybe due to nagging injuries hes trying to change his swing similar to Tiger.

This HGH and Steroid talk is insane, its like the red scare in sports, its disgusting. You have no evidence, factual or circumstantial, to suggest that hes ever taken anything. We're talking about golf here, who cares how old he is, its not like people havent competed at his age before anyway. Vijay will be back, he probably just needs time.

I can't believe some of you guys are mentioning steroids or HGH with Vijay. C'Mon... give the guy a break! This is ridiculous. He's had a down second half, and has really struggled lately. He's just not playing well right now and I know he's working on something new with his swing. Seems he's lost confidence (again) with his putter and we all know how that can affect your game. I give him credit for going out there and playing every week. Since obviously he's not playing well he could easily skip a few events here and there but he hasn't.

The guy is almost 45, he is getting up there and can't compete as well anymore, that might be a main problem.

Damn, what a great 40 yd shot! Looks like a playoff if he can sink the 3 footer.

Those roids really helped his touch on that shot....

I like VJ, but he's getting too old. He's still a great player, but can not compete with todays younger players like he used to. A lot of fun watching him play Pebble Beach, choking in the playoff though :/

We'll see if he can pull it out.

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
    • I had an article on Cam Smith pop up along with this..... Current major eligibility list for all LIV Golf players Here's a look at which majors, if any, all LIV Golf players are eligible.
