There's a brand new one by my house but I haven't been there in about a month, I'll have to go check it out.  The last time I was there the golf section was pretty large but mostly clothing and bags, it didn't have as large a club section as the one in Smithtown. I know they closed the Golf Galaxy in Westbury due to the opening of the PGA Tour Superstore.

Yeah, I went to the Commack one. The store looks great, but the golf section is withering.

I was just in a DSG store this afternoon.  The golf section is big as always and the whole store was filled with shoppers.  Most were carrying out bags so business must be booming.  A lot of buy one get 50% off in the golf clothing section.  This store does not carry Titleist clubs but the one 40 miles away carries the complete lineup.  All of the other brands are well represented.  I know there is a ton of Cleveland wedges in both of them.  I bought a Sunday golf bag online last night with free shipping and $10 off coupon because the website did not list any available around these parts.  I get in the store and there were 4 of them in the sea of golf bags.

I was doing a little chipping on the range today and hit a few irons but I was so windy I bailed early. I had some time to kill so I swung by Dicks on the way home to see if they had any new fun stuff. Walking in, they had a bag of Jetspeed and Nike clubs they were trying to move. I went to the golf section and it was bizarre. Everything was condensed super tight even though it was in the same square footage. Way more racks of their cheap Top Flite and other brands, but the major brands were weirdly missing. I didn't see any Ping or Titleist clubs. I'm not sure if they used to carry them, but I figured they did. The had the Callaway XR clubs, but no Big Bertha Alpha 815 drivers. I feel like I had seen them there over Christmas. All they had were the 2014 clubs. Their R15 lineup was barebones too. None of the new fun Aeroburner mini driver or HL woods.

I went to the simulator and hit some clubs, but all they had were the XR, R15, and Aeroburner. Their simulators were bizarre. Everything showed me hitting it almost dead straight. That'd be a miracle considering my general rust and normal slice. Numbers seemed weird too.

Gear-wise, they didn't have any of the new Adiboost shoes or really any other new gear besides Footjoy.

Anyway, all that was mostly stream of consciousness, and I know DSG is scaling back its golf business, but this is like waving the white flag. This is nearly brand new store, too. Only about 2 years old.

It's funny that this thread was bumped up (and that you were the one that bumped it up, @dkolo ).  I went there to the Dick's in Huntington to buy tees and didn't stay long but I was shocked they had a room for golf since they fired their PGA pros last year

Dick thoughts be slapping the hell out of Ed... Ed is an idiot he always has been and always will be... They still have golf stuff at Dick's but it is scaled down a bit... Dick's actually started as a bait and tackle shop in my hometown Binghamton, NY (I was born there and mostly raised there)... maybe their trying to gain enough of a profit margin to renovate store 1... which as long as Dick's stays a float, that little hole in the wall store will stay open... I have never in my 28 years (I've only played golf for 18 years) bought a $500 driver when it was $500... or a $1000 set of irons when they were a $1000... Back in the summer of 2003 when I bought my first set of clubs with my own money, I spent $900 at Dick's... I bought a set of Titleist 990b irons on clearance for $350... I worked my butt off to get those clubs... I believe it's the OEMs fault for the decline of the business... I really do, you do not need 5 new drivers released in a year, or what amounts to 8 sets of irons in a year... Take a look at Tour Edge, they don't release 6 new drivers a year, they release what really amounts to 2, an Exotics line, and a Bazooka line (replaced by Hot Launch) occasionally they'll release a second Exotics driver aimed at the lower price point but that's usually it, the Exotics and Hot Launch lines you can build an entire set of clubs on the model of that year... It's the OEMs fault and I'm not blaming Dick's at all... Callaway and Taylormade can learn from companies like Mizuno and Titleist and stop releasing so many new clubs...

Appreciate you fixing that other post. Our economic condition has been brewing for 30 years, we just didn't see it coming. Plenty of blame to go around.

I actually have a full set of clubs, but they were given to me by a stalker so I feel uncomfortable about them. Probably be a new starter set in the future. So I do know that golf is not a rich man's game, but that image is out there and has always been...

:-O I bought a set from Global Golf.  That seems pretty boring compared to your clubs.  Maybe you could post them in the classifieds and use the money for a set that didn't have such a bad history associated with it.

Still advertising tho ... The commercials with Scott Van Pelt say "Americas number 1 gold retailer." Hmm, strange.

That's slander against Cash 4 Gold and it will not go unpunished!

Does Scott Van Pelt wear one of those steel-brimmed bowler hats in the ad? :-D

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
