Poll added.

I voted for Utley, from what I've seen Pelz gets too concerned with a straight back, straight through method. Square to the arc sure (or close to it). There also isn't a lot of "flow" to Pelz's stroke.

I've never read either of their putting instruction - actually I've never read any putting specific books - so I didn't vote but I suspect I'm closer to Utley than Pelz.

I saw instruction by Dave Pelz where he demonstrated his straight back straight through method with a swinging door example.

His demo showed that a door hinged at the top hit the ball straight and a door hinged so it swings in an arc that required the ball position to be at the same spot without any variance in ball position.

This method made sense to me and removed the variable of ball position. When I used a putting thought of an arc swing I over controlled the putter causing a line variance.

I recently switched to a face balanced putter that seems to make the path easier to attain.

Pelz greatly prefers face balanced putters so that the face stays square all the time. For me, even when I putt with a face balanced putter, I find it near impossible to comfortably keep the face square throughout the stroke so I tend to disagree with his methodology there.

That would work and make sense, if we used putters that had a shaft angle of 90*,and then bent over so our backs were parallel to the ground, and then hung our arms perpendicular to the ground...

Pelz's next putting book will be co-authored with Michelle Wie?
