  1. 1. In need of a birdie on a par 4, what is your desired yardage range to stick one tight?

I would say 60 yds. (a half PW) or 121-130 yds. (an 8 iron).

Most people have a partial shot AND a full shot ideal range.

Back in the late 90s, I actually charted this over three seasons:

  • 25% of birdies came from 8i draw hit back against a L-to-R crosswind
  • 25% of birdies came from sinking greenside chip shots (often with a 8i)
  • 50% came from wherever

(I was about 15 HDCP back then and saw more birdies than I do now)

If I am less than 130 and there is no trouble short and right of the pin placement, per my shot pattern, I'll go for the pin. Everything else is for the center of the green, away from the trouble. On a good day I can get 1/3 of these ideal situations close enough to make a birdie.

Ditto. Anyone who votes for anything outside of the shortest possible distance is kidding themselves.

If your answer is anything but "<60," you're wrong.

Same here.

I also believe this is the only correct answer.......

@Spitfisher , I see you are a 3.5 handicap (mine is probably in the 12-18 range).  I think I would be willing to challenge you to a contest (all in good fun of course :-D ).  I will hit shots from 40-60 yards, and you hit from 112 (your stated go-to yardage).  I would think I would be able to get closer to the hole on a more consistent basis than you.

I like my full, normal swings for approach shots. I am pretty good from 100 yard marker, since this is the shot I practice the most.  I save the 1/2 and 3/4 swing for longer pitch shots. On chip shots, I am using my putting stroke. .

It makes absolutely no difference how badly I might need one or want one, they will come when they come, not when I wish it.  And with my game, they will come just as often from 150 yards as from 80 yards. Since these days I'm rarely inside of 120 yards off the tee on any par 4 (and more often outside of 150), this question is mostly irrelevant for me. (I picked <60 just because that would be my preference if possible)

That first stat is oddly specific. Did you total 4 birdies during that timeframe? Perhaps 8?

The challenge is a good idea although it might be more beneficial for each person to conduct both sides of the challenge then compare results.

I voted the same as @Spitfisher based on the kind of swing that I'm most comfortable with, but it would be interesting to plot 10 shots from 115 and 10 shots from 60 and see if my comfort level is self deceiving.

I may give this a shot next time I'm out.

lol, i was thinking the same thing...

my guess was 4 birdies, as the likelihood of birdying with an 8i draw into a L to R crosswind more than once but often enough such that the percentage of these birdie shots equals an even 25% isn't very good.

but hey, who's counting :smartass:

As close as possible! Within 30 yards is ideal but that's not usually setting up a birdie!

true, except on really, short par 4's or if you're long and accurate off the tee.

welcome to TST by the way

If I'm within 30 yards on a par 4, then I'm praying to get up and down for par.  Sometimes on a shortish par 5 I can still get that close for a birdie approach.

If I need a birdie, I'd desire to drive the green and be able to two putt for birdie. Otherwise, I'm resorting to prayer for divine intervention. Not that driving greens wouldn't require a favorable wind from the divine.

But yeah, if I got inside of 40 yards before my approach, I'd be disappointed if I didn't make birdie. I'm not nearly consistent enough to have a realistic expectation of birdie outside of that range.

    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).

    • I'm relieved someone finally defined hiking. I was giddy when I saw these new TPI videos a day or so after they dropped. Very easy to understand the problem and solution the way they have presented it. Been working on fixing this for about a year and a half now. It's nice to be able to call it something so communication becomes easy.  I was working on more lateral and up too, but just having someone define it clearly in video form was so helpful for me to continue confidently with what I thought was wrong and how I had to fix it.  My conceptual error here was just trying to rotate like a tour pro but without including the necessary forward pressure/weight shift associated with enough lateral and upward motion of the pelvis.  This video is great too, as is Greg Rose.
    • Day 2.    couple mins of rolling putts end over end.    10 mins of Slow, mirror work, working on starting the downswing and impact wrist positions. Hit a couple balls into the net after.    Then finished with a couple chips to see if I could repeat what I worked on yesterday.
