For the 15 handicapper, whcih set would you reccomend? I'm not too concerned about workability, and most of my misses are fat or thin, not on the toe or heel. I'm looking for something that launches the ball very high.
I'm looking at the Titleist 775.CB, Callaway X-20, TM R7, Cobra FP, Cobra 3100 I/H, Wilson Ci6, and Clevland CG4.

I started golfing early last summer with a set of Ping I5's. Technically, I started with a "Walmart" set pretty much that I was borrowing for my first couple times out just to make sure I even liked the sport. Yeah......turns out this game can be addicting. So, I gradually improved my bag till I felt comfortable with what I was using for equipment compared to my skill level.

I couldn't be happier with the Pings I have now. For game inprovement irons aswell as players irons, Ping makes a great club. Im growing out of my Pings and I actually just picked up some Mizuno MP-60's, but thats just because I wanted a blade style iron with more workability.

I would say the I5's would be perfect for your handicap. In my opinion, the Raptures or the G5's would be "too much" of a game improvement iron for you.

All in all, you need to choose a club you feel comfortable hitting. If you get set on a "game improvement iron" but dont like the way they feel, look, play...then ur screwed already. If you get your hand on a set of "not so much" a game improvement iron, but you can hit em, they feel great, and you have confidence when looking down on them, then why not lean towards that one?

Good luck with the search, I just had to pitch the Pings, as I think they make a GREAT set of irons.

You started golfing last summer and you're already a 9.6 hcp? Amazing! How'd you do that?

Of that list, I'd go with the X20s, the 3100s or the CG4s.

Practice, practice, practice. Im at where Im at right now because golf is a daily thing for me usually. If Im not on the course at least for a quick 9, I'll hit the range or putting green for a little bit. Golf just kind of came natually I suppose. I am nowhere near perfect though, I will never be able to make a career out of this game and thats just something I've accepted. Its just a lot of fun to try to perfect something that you will never be able to perfect.

As far as me getting new irons, I went FROM my Pings TO MP-60's. Went from I5 (game improvement cavity back) to MP 60's (players iron muscle back).

taylormade r7's. r7 tp's are even a reasonable option if your ball striking is strong for your handicap. but yeah, the r7's are quite forgiving and decently workable. they're really great imo

Tested and hated the r7 tps

Not a fan of cast clubs and i found them to feel awful, going from my forged TM 300 series irons

Ended up with Callaway X Forged irons which im loving!!

I'd recommed the mizunos mp30 irons, really liked them on test

Definitely should try the new MP-57 from Mizuno. Forged and cavity back for both feel and forgiveness.

Have any of you guys hit the Wilson Ci6s? They won the Golf Magazines game improvement irons club test in 2006 and they are only $300 at TGW.

haha. Thats what the index sais. I've had some nasty spreads this season though. Lately (past couple of months) I've been shooting consistent low 80's upper 70's golf. But.......earlier this spring I had a couple disaster rounds of upper 90's and even a 104 I believe. 25 mph gusting winds on a links style course and my game was horrendous!!! I dont think I had a green that I didn't 3 putt. Im not as consistent as I'd like to be, but lately I've been happy with the results of this season.

Back to the topic on hand. Looks like you're getting pretty good feedback from some people on here. I hadn't even thought about the Mizuno MP-57's. I haven't seen them in person yet, but they look like a very forgiving, cavity-back iron and they're made by Mizzy so you cant go wrong!!! Give em a shot too!

had the opportunity to test out the taylormade r7 irons ... ...these irons were carrying the balls 10~15+ yards further compared to the mizuno mx-23...and extremely forgiving and easy to hit....truely amazing distance...straight and high ...(had to make one minor adjustment to the placement of the ball, but figured i out after 2 or 3 swings...placed ball bit further toward the tip of the head...) ..almost made me want to switch to them....thought maybe the different placement of the ball was what was making me hit further...tried it with my mx-23...and nope...that wasn't it...

    • I run tournaments and want to put in a local rule that allows relief from tree roots and rocks that are not loose impediments. We have some really terrible lies in some of our courses in my area and nobody is getting paid enough to break clubs. Let me know if you think the verbage for this rule makes sense. Local Rule Roots and Rocks You may move your ball from a tree root or buried rock one club length for free relief no closer to the hole. However you may not use this rule to get relief from a tree, bush, boulder, or other foliage hindering your swing. Your only option here is to play it as it lies or take an unplayable for a one stroke penalty.
    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
