Hi Everyone, my first video that mashes a bunch of driver swings.  Looking at the swing, it is fairly obvious that I come over the top and have a left to right ball flight, though every now and then i catch one and it goes (i think the last one in this set).  What I need to do is get far more consistent off the tee to set up approach shots from the fairway.

Anyway, never took a lesson, so everything that moves or doesn't in my swing is as a result of my natural (un)giftedness.

I'd be very interested in hearing what you have to say.  cheers, rusty

Hi, welcome to the site. One thing that stands out is your shoulder alignment at address. Your feet are aimed right, your upper body is aimed well left and the knees and hips are somewhere in between. Your knees are "twisted" so far left of your feet that it causes you to set up with a fairly straight right leg. All this is kinda pre-setting yourself to come over it.

I'd check out these threads but definitely make sure to clean up the address position. Aim your feet more left and your shoulder more right. Throw a club or alignment stick on the ground to help with the feet, then try to have the shoulders parallel to the stick. Shoulders will probably feel like they're aimed 50 yards right at first.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Hey thanks mvmac, amazing how those ingrained habits just go unnoticed, I started by looking at swing plane, swing length etc, but of course, start at the start!  really makes you want to pound your head on keyboard.

Anyways, took your advice to the range today.  Unfortunately, I didn't have anyone to spot me, or a camera, but I noticed the following..

  1. evaluating my aim by putting down an alignment stick after taking my stance, I am pretty good at aligning my feet when I am thinking about it.  So that is good at least.
  2. turning my shoulders is an odd sensation, make me feel like the left shoulder really drops down.  I did have another video from that same day, a 6i from the caddy view.  the camera wasn't very well set up, but it was good enough to show that a line through the shoulders would definitely be rising from right side thru left, so I wouldn't be surprised if that shift in shoulder alignment served to level them out.
  3. I have never been so conscious of my feet, hips and shoulders at address, really a terrible feeling lol.  but what the heck, we're all trying to get better.

thanks again, I hope to have another vid soon.  cheers.

should have noted one other thing, while the results of day one were predictably inconsistent, i did note that with my irons, my divots were a lot straighter, and I mean a lot!

Fairly productive day at the range I think.  Pretty certain I have my alignment issues cleaned up to a pretty good degree (though some of those drivers look a little sloppy with the feet, shoulders look much better (i hope)).  here is a set of 6 iron and driver videos.  My amateur opinion at this point is that i need to get the club inside my hands at that A6 position you noted.  I probably also could use a little help getting the camera set up properly lol.

    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
    • I’ve recently started KBs too and really enjoy it. I have one day of armour building complex and one day of a mobility routine. Adding in a speed training day too.    which routines do you do @Elmer
    • Again, I’m not an expert so take it with a grain of salt My question is whether laying back even further becomes too conservative and that strategy is suboptimal as a result? Essentially what’s the cost of guaranteed longer second shot vs the x% risk for hitting the bunker? I think the optimal way to answer the question is looking at strokes gained, in consideration of the hazards and penalties, and picking the strategy that maximizes SG off the tee. I’ve seen some apps that do this but I’m not sure how accurate they are.   And again, asking all this so I can learn what I should be doing in these situations rather than questioning your approach Bill. I would give an example of the course I’m joining this year where I plan to aim at the bunker, but I don’t want to take over your swing thread any further!
    • What @DeadMan said. From the satellite it looks like there's tall grass to the right, long of the fairway post-dog-leg. But left it just looks like regular rough all the way to the neighboring tee boxes. If that's true I'm aiming left edge of the green and bombs away every time, hoping for a 30-70 yard up and down opportunity.
    • What's the case against blasting a driver at the green? I'm guessing it puts the penalty area/fescue too much into play, but if that's just standard rough around the green, there would be a good case for it. If it's not driver, then I agree with your approach. The one thing I would add is to shade your aim towards the bunkers vs. center of the fairway. Hitting out of a bunker is (marginally) better than a penalty drop.
