Consent laws are messed up in the U.S. Many people have been branded as pedophiles when they sleep with a 17 year old and they are 20. Stuff like that is ridiculous. Age of consent in WA is 16 and I think that is about right. People in positions of power can't have sex with anyone under 18 but 16 year olds are quite old enough and knowledgable enough not to blame the 20 year old for taking advantage.

I do think that child molesters and rapists such as this with irrefutable evidence against them should face much, much harsher and severe punishments.  I also think that this Fogle information goes to show that they are sick and that nothing will deter them from what they are sexually attracted too.  Sexual attraction is the strongest force in nature, and being sexually attracted to minors is an extremely dangerous sickness that I believe cannot be deprogrammed anymore than someones sexual orientation.  We scoff at religious programs and attempts to "cure" homosexual behaviors but somehow think that it is something we can do with sexual predators.  Sorry, it doesn't work that way.

That being said the world is changing a lot and kids are exposed to much more and are more sophisticated than they used to be.  I have always thought that legal age of consent should be the same year that you can legally drive (at that point it is a lot harder to find out things, kids can get fake id's and all of that stuff), so either raise driving age to 18 or drop legal age of consent to 16 without the age brackets and all of that game playing on who can have sex with who. 

I went to school with girls whose whole game was to try and bang the teachers and coaches.  Rumor has it that the cheerleaders at my old high school were talking about who had sex with Coach X and unbeknownst to them, his wife was sitting behind them, she got up and walked away, Coach X probably did not have a good night.  There were several others, and I know one girl for a fact was banging one of the teachers, and liked it.  Several of these girls had boyfriends in college or slightly older and would brag about it and how cool it was and they were.  I think they end up playing the victim card a lot when mom and daddy finds out and they don't want daddy to think they are not the innocent little flower they have always been.  I just think that if you are old enough to drive around and do things like that than you are old enough to make those other decisions and face any consequences that come with them (so maybe the age should be raised for a drivers license).  Society would make these girls I went to school with out to be victims, I can assure you that they were anything but victims.  This does not mean I don't think there are girls at that age who are victims however.  A girl who worked for my parents was telling me how her boyfriend and her got together and the math was he was 30 and she was 16 when they started, I thought that was pretty wrong but she was not a victim, glad I never met that guy.  Her parents were divorced and dad was not in the picture, so, daddy issues maybe?    

Laws have to be equal and justifiably equitable.  What do I mean?  I mean that women get the same sentences that men get for doing these things.  Debra LaFave being deemed too pretty for prison was an injustice and we see many of these.  Sorry, just because a woman did it to a boy doesn't make it any different, they are either the same crime or they are not. The second part of this, justifiably equitable?  Stop sentencing non violent criminals (such as crooked executives, etc.) to longer sentences than you do for child molestation and rape!  5 years for fondling a small boy but take our money and we will give you a Bernie Sanders type prison sentence that is basically life in prison. 

I have a ten year old daughter and I do worry so much for her and others, all the drugs, date rape drugs, forced peer pressure drinking, sexting, all this stuff is crazy.  The world is a lot smaller, one mistake and it is out on FB, Twitter, Instagram and everywhere else for you to live with the rest of your life.  Fathers (and mothers) be parents to your daughters (and sons) and make sure they are educated in the things that can affect their lives forever.

OT, but this is a true, funny story.   I filmed an interview with my grandma b/c she was a natural historian.  One of the stories she told me was about her marriage to my grandpa.   She said she was conned by her cousin into marrying an old man (her cousin's friend) when she was 14.   Really?   So I asked her how old my grandpa was at the time.   Without blinking an eye, she said "17."   I burst out laughing and could not stop my laugh for a while - all captured in VHS.

My great grandmother was married at 14 in Italy, it wasn't uncommon in 1900 for 14-15 year old girls to get married.

Restitution and fines are $175k in fines and over $1m in fines to pay his victims $100k each.

Saw that.  I thought that they had agreed to a sentence no less than 5 and no more than 12.5 in exchange for the guilty plea so not sure how they got to 15 years but it sounds like that is what he deserves.  Some of the stuff he talked about that you can hear is disgusting.  Unfortunately he will be in Administrative Segregation with others like him and snitches so he probably won't get the foot long with no lube that he deserves but at least he will be stuck behind bars.

I don't know anything about what was agreed to in this case but sentence recommendations in plea bargains are generally not binding on the judge. He can go above or below the recommendation if he feels strongly about it. They usually don't because sticking with the recs encourages plea bargains that keep dockets manageable.

Once the plea was presented the judge has the option to impose what he feels should be the sentence. He can enforce or go above or below but the accused can decline and proceed to trial. My guess is that the evidence is so damning not that his lawyer was like, we can fight this but you may and probably will end up with 30+ years and everyone will get the true gist of what a monster you are.
