Uncomfortable Lesson

Hi everybody! So in my quest to break 90 and be the best golfer I can possibly be I've begun taking lessons and scouring through golf forums to try to absorb as much as possible. My instructor seems like a knowledgable coach but I has an uncomfortable experience in our last session. This may sound bizarre but he tells me I've got 'jumpy' hips and we need to quiet them down. He got me into posture the other day, and He kept putting his hands on my hips and was getting uncomfortably close to my backside. He said he was guiding my hip motion, but it felt borderline over the top. Is it me or does this sort of thing happen often in a lesson? A man holding another mans hips just doesn't resonate we'll with me....

I agree. Its kevin Costner's fault for putting his hands and other things too close to the lady getting the lesson in the film 'Tin Cup'. I would have probably told him to stop and would definitely not return. Its a poor substitute for finding a way to get you to experience the movement for yourself.

I once had a similar experience with a pro who kept getting behind me during my back swing and pushing his left knee into the back of my right knee. I told him to stop and never returned.

Its why I take video lesson from Evolvr ... :-D Anytime anyone is in those situations its good to speak up, some people touch a lot, and never think twice about it, its just what they do. The instructor may have been genuinely trying to help you. I know people that just do not like anyone to touch them ... to point they hate getting a haircut. His "style" does not appear to suit you ...

Not sure about your situation. Usually, I prefer to demo without touching and hope they can imitate, but at times I think it is useful to touch someone to show them a certain movement or position if they are not picking up on the demo or explanation. As a ski instructor, I was taught to first ask the client if it was ok before touching them.

And when I was an altar boy in grade school, the Catholic priests never touched me either. Go figure.

Maybe he went to a Haney clinic for the hands-on experience.

Seems normal for instructors. Years ago when i was taking lessons, my teacher saw me on the range hitting as bad as always and jumped out there and did something similar - very embarrassing to me since the range was full. My wife got a good laugh out of it, so i guess all is good.

Interesting. What did he tell you was the point of the knee pushing? My instructor tells me the hips need to slide forward a tiny bit and really thrust hard toward the ball. The motion he was groping me toward kinda felt like I was pumping and turning at the same time if that makes sense? Feels like i'm throwing my groin in an upward fashion.

Wow, if he had said that the perverbial golf glove would have come off. I'm just wondering if this type of hands on instruction is an old-school method type thing or if anyone else around here really gets into it on this sort of level. I've heard talk about pressure mapping and other such things...not too sure what that is but it sounds similar to my experience.

@AvocadoWillie comfortable, let your instructor know or hire another one.   I had five 1 on 1 lessons and my instructor has to put his arms to guide my swing movement but not the way you described if that helps.

It's not unheard of, he was just trying to get you to feel the piece. If you feel uncomfortable with it, let him know or ask him to show you in another way.

Lighten up Francis. It doesn't matter what we say, if the guy is uncomfortable that's his business and not yours...just because you welcome contact doesn't mean he does. Avacado, you can find instruction all over. I'd suggest you read the post regarding "Questions to ask your instructor". You can certainly get quality instruction without being uncomfortably handled.

Yes I agree...he was most certainly trying to get me to feel his 'piece'. Thanks for the heads up, i'll most certainly make sure he shows me another way.
