  1. 1. The ball went...

    • In the fairway
      14
    • Right rough, trees on the right
      16
    • Left rough
      26

@iacas I get that. Would be a bit disappointed if this was an extreme toe strike and hook into left rough - the clubhead image seemed a bit obvious. Maybe not - doh.

The clubhead can and does twist quite a bit, yeah. Odd but it happens. Ditto for heel hits (though a bit less as it's closer to the shaft/axis).

First thought: big draw left rough - then: no, that isn't me, baby draw center fairway.

looking at where the ball is starting and if it is a baby draw, in the fairway.

Waffle much ( talking to myself )

That face is really open though. I would think his grip would be firm enough to stop a toe hit from twisting the club that far.

Matt, check out the video Erik posted. The clubhead twisting open has nothing to do with the player's grip, it's twisting about the shaft. I believe the shaft itself is twisting, too.

I haven't cheated and looked at the other answers but I voted left rough. You can see that the ball started way straighter than where the face is pointed right now, which tells me one thing: Holy toe strike engaging gear effect Batman!!

It would be funny if the video showed the head flying off. :-)

The golf ball doesn't appear to be heading way right, since you can see the tee it started on, but the clubface is twisted open. My guess is he toed it and the shot is a snap hook left.

Here's his 3W swing. Not the swing in the photo. Nice swing.

Here's just past impact for the 3W. Looks like he hit the center of the face? Or maybe toe-ish? Now I wanna see his iron swing.

I'm in the "toed it" camp, though there's not really enough there to tell if it finished in the left rough or fairway (plus we don't know the size of the fairway, if it's a dogleg, etc.). I ended up voting for left rough.

From his instructor, I think the player normally hits it 300-325.

Many of you guys were correct, he toed it and that's why the face was "twisted" so far right after impact. The bulge/curvature of the driver face helped the ball start right to compensate for the "draw spin" (left tilt of the spin axis) due to the gear effect. The off center hit twisted the club one way and "twisted" the ball the other way, like two gears meshing.

More on gear effect with your driver (also gear effect with irons but irons don't have bulge and roll), generally....

  • When you hit the ball high on the face, it will launch higher and spin less. Goes high because of where the curvature of the face is pointing and spins less because of where the ball contacts the face in relation to the COG (center of gravity) of the club. Reason OEM's try to get the COG of drivers as low as possible.
  • When you hit the ball low on the face, it will launch lower and spin more.
  • When you hit the ball on the toe, the ball will start right and draw/hook to the left. Could go straight if you swing left enough.
  • When you hit the ball on the heel, the ball will start left but fade/slice to the right.
  • Draw drivers like the PING G30 SF Tec have more weight towards the heel, which moves the COG of the driver a little more towards the heel. So a center hit effectively plays like a slight toe strike. Helps players draw the ball or fade it less.

What I think is happening:

He's hitting a high draw out over the tree line trying to reach the green of a short, dogleg right par 4 hole.  I think I see a bunker straight away guarding the left side of the green.

In summary:  He's hitting a high, soft big right to left bender.

Great thread! Let's keep it going. Without Googling this and seeing the whole swing, what's going to happen here?

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
