I'm watching the American Century Championship. Jerry Rice is smoking a huge stogey. Before his shot, he will throw the lit cigar on the ground, hit his shot, pick up the cigar, and start smoking it again. Is this normal?

Some people use what's called a Tee-Gar. It's a round trough item you can stick into the ground, and rest your cigar atop it.

If the greenskeeper put down weedkiller earlier that day, it could get Β WK on your cigar, and into your mouth.

I think Jerry might be a homer-gay, because I'm not convinced that cigar was ever lit.................. he chomped on that bakky a lot, but I'm not sure it was ever lit. Β  Not that there is anything wrong with playing an entire 18 without lighting up........

Considering the event was at Taho.............maybe the smoke-nazis didn't allow smokers to light up even in wide open golf course spaces.

im a cigarette smoke and thats pretty much my m-o when i play. Unless im having a horrible round then it just stays in my mouth during the swing.

It's normal for me, which might make abnormal for others. I do know it does not work with a can of cold beverage.

I sit my butts on the hand cart or cart floor so the mouthpiece never touches. Is it important? Who knows. Surely there is plenty of weedkiller on the smoke itself from when it was grown but u gotta try.......

It's not a good idea to put the tee, or smoke item back in your mouth after laying it down on the ground after fertilization and/or when heavy goose poop is present. My favorite lefty Phil used to.

I do this at time, perfectly normal. Most time I leave it in the cart, I have a cigar holder. But You can't get enough fertilizer on the end of a cigar that would be harmful, unless you dipped the cigar in the chemical container.

Yeah,

some people event take a huge engine car, smoke the whole world to go park in front of the golf, play, and go home. all this time they particpate in one the world most active killing pollution machines (fossil fuel engines).

the guy who smokes burns leaves. pollution zΓ©ro.

I use one of these when I golf and play softball.

Really convenient and it clips pretty much anywhere.

I smoke cigars and I play golf. Β Just not at the same time. Β If I did, I wouldn't lay my cigar on the grass. Β Wouldn't want the weed killer/grass chemicals--like was said above. Β But I see guys do it all the time.

I would probably use something like Miguel Jimenez' cigar holder:

Perfectly.

I ask a question, is it just plain bad form to do so. I wouldn't want to see someone throw down there cigar on dry patch of grass or grass shavings and have a fire issue.

Also, I detest smokers who are not considerate of other people. If you are going to lite up and share a cart ask the other person if they mind. Also, be aware of if you are downwind or upwind so that the smoke doesn't blow into people who don't like it.

I don't want you all thinking the wrong thing about my question. I like cigars. I just have never blazed one while playing bad golf in hot Texas. I'm not the most germ conscious person but I was shocked seeing him put it in his mouth right off the ground.

No chance of that occurring, it's OK. I don't smoke cigars but 15 yrs ago I smoked cigs and did that all the time. Not a safety issue.

Well, when I worked for Wooster, Ohio I saw a guy flick a cigarette into some dry mulch and it started to smoke. I walked over and dumped my pop (soda) on it.

I play on a course that only waters the fairway. Last year the rough was just basically dried out grass. If they mowed it you have dried out dead grass. I would be very worried if someone dropped a cigar on that.

I would say the odds are low. Still, it can happen. When it comes to fire, some odds you just don't mess around with.

The difference being that on a tee box or in the fairway or on a green, it's on the ground for maybe 30 seconds, during the shot then it's picked back up. So again, no safety issue. Flicking it into the woods and walking away could end up badly, this could not.
