Hi!

Anyone tried both Ping G30 and i20 drivers?

I have an i20 and I struggle sometimes, spreading the drives all over.

It feels very unforgiving compared to my old G15, which I trusted 100% until the hosel broke :-(

I heard about the G30 and that it is very forgiving, could anybody confirm this or give any other advice?

Thanks for feed-back!

I have not tried the i20. But I had a Cobra Amp Cell & aG25 & now a G30. I am a 33 handicap and am not in the fairway very often. However I find that I am hitting more fairways and have much more confidence on the tee with the G30. Even my golf buddies noticed my driving has improved.

I have a g30 allways feels great to swing, makes good sound. I seem to hit mine leftish overall a good driver. I mostly game my i25. I make more centered hits with it and better controll for me.

I've had the G30 LS TEC, with the premium shaft, for a few months now, very happy with it. Prior to that I had a G15 with the premium shaft... I was happy with that as well. While I had the G15, I did demo several drivers out of curiosity, including the i series. The G30 made me switch, while nothing prior to that did. I've noticed tighter dispersion with the G30, but a very small loss of distance... Possibly due to being the low spin model and the shaft being 0.5" shorter. I'm very happy with it. Hope that helps!

Yes the G30 is designed to be more forgiving and launch higher.

I just bought the G30 a couple weeks ago and absolutely love it! Very forgiving and with my mishits I still get way better yardage than out of my old driver.

G30 is awesome.  I would get fitted.  You may be a candidate for a G30 LS.  I am playing a G 30 LS with the shaft shortened by the fitter and it is easier to control and goes the same distance.

Ditch the i.

Good luck!

I played my third round with the G30.  My average drive is 220.  I hit 256, 245, 231, 229 and some bad ones of course.  But this is a lot better than I am used to.

Thanks for all input! Now I just need to try it out myself and start negotiating the golf budget with my wife :-)

About the LS Tec, what advantage would it give me?

I find that my i20 doesn't give me more distance (compared to my old G15) even when I do hit a good shot.

Maybe I'm just not that good golfer ;-)

Lowers the spin by 200-400 rpm (compared to a G30). Any idea what your spin rate is now?

Last time I checked: 1600 with my 9.5 degree regular flex i20 driver. 15.5 launch angle, 91 mph club speed.

Yeah so you don't want to spin it any less than that. I would check with PING, I'm not sure if the LS spins less than the i20, I would guess that they are pretty similar.

Yea, they were pretty similar if I recall. I really liked the i20. Probably one of the best feeling Ping drivers in a long time. I am not sure what they did after that changed it so much. I wish they went back to the i20 model for how impact felt.

With those spin numbers you want to stay away from the LS.  Try the SF or straight G30.  Those are more suited to your needs.  With 92 mph try a R flex and the softR as well.  Good luck in your search.

I can get those numbers with the G30-LsTec....spin around 2200, 9.5 Stiff and a 17.3 launch.   My clubhead speed is 93 though.  When I consulted with PING, they said I'm right on the bubble of regular vs stiff flex....and to go with whichever one I felt better with.

The i series of drivers should be lower spinning, even considering the G30 ls tech. Got fitted last year for a i25 9.5 (adjusted to 10.0) head in tour stiff ping shaft. Spun 300-400 rpm less then the G30 ls 9.5 head with a similar specd shaft. Same launch' barely noticable difference in height but more roll. 14.4 launch, 2100rpm and 162 mph ball speed.

    • Tell me you've not seen Bill play without telling me you've not seen Bill play? 😄 Just teasing @billchao. 😄
    • And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.
    • He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.
    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
    • That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.
