Many years ago  when I was playing the Casablanca course in Mesquite Nevada.  They were getting ready to overseed the fairways. This made the fairways extremely firm, if not just plain hard. The 18th hole is a south to north affair, and I had a 25+/- mph wind  behind me. 396 yards is what the gps said. I had a very short chip to the pin, and 1 putt for a birdie,

When I was younger, and bullet proof, my drives were in 275 range. Now days 240 is pretty good for me.

DISCLAIMER: I used to be able to kill the Golf ball, before my accident Pre-Accident: when I was 21, I was play the 1st Hole at Elm Tree which is 415 and drove it 10 yards short of the green. Post-Accident: par-five, 1st at Newman I hit one over the driveway about 310 had 180 in.. This year 290 on 10 at Newman... Though during the City Championship last weekend I hit one 80 yards short of the green on the 365-yard 5th, had 83 yards to a front pin, so I probably hit it 275 into the wind... The one on 10 was on Sunday...

What happened? Or should we not ask?

Really really bad car wreck, a close friend and I were coming home from a tournament, a drunk driver swerved onto the wrong side of the median my friend saw him and tried to get out of the way and we got hit anyway, my friend was killed in the accident, I was lucky to be alive, broken leg, hip displaced, separated shoulder, I was wearing my seatbelt, my friend was not... I still have nightmares about it... The range of motion is getting better (with a lot of physical therapy)... It was almost a year before I got back on the course... I couldn't hit it like I used to, my short game was way off, what I was hitting 2-iron, SW to before the accident (1st at Elm Tree), I was hitting Driver, 4-wood to when I first came back...

Sorry for your loss. Well, it's good you can play again.

Thanks, I love Golf so much, I actually don't mind being a 10 hdcp again... If I can average about 270 or so again, I might be able to become scratch again (In 4 or 5 years)... Gotta shore up my inconsistencies, but it's off topic, I think I hit Driver, 8-iron last time I played Elm Tree... Carry on...with the farthest drive discussion... Not bad for Post #1000

About once a week I'll catch a super drive that goes about 260 yds. with roll. Normal drives are between 210 and 230.

Also, certain turf conditions and design features of holes can really  help out the long drives.

I was in Okinawa, Japan in 1973 with the Marine Corps. At the Kadena Air Base course, volcanic rock underlayed some of the fairways. The No. 10,  Par 5 was over 600 yds. long with a dogleg left. I regularly hit drives over 300 yards, because a high draw would hit the very hard fairways and run out forever. It was slightly downhill on the drive, so it was possible to hit through the landing area with too much roll, if you didn't catch a draw.

I found a similar thing in central Oklahoma at a course called Cedar Valley (near Crescent), circa 1985). On one nine, two of the Par 5 holes ran about 590 yards each, and had sharp dogleg left designs. The holes turned at about 280 yards out, and the outside of the dogleg was banked like the outer edge of an auto race track. Soil was hard red clay. Again, a draw down the right edge of the fairway would bounce a few times, hit the banks and ricochet left down past the dogleg. Because of the hard soil and banking, I sometimes got drives of more than 300 yards.

Focus, connect and follow through!

So far on the course nothing really more than 250ish. Hit a few a little bit further on the range though. Rarely even get them that far on the course either. A good average for me is more like 220. Slowed my swing down a bit so I stop spraying them all over the place hoping for the one big drive of the day.

Same here. I know what you are going through. I was t-boned by a drunk driver. I had the green light, and he didn't see his red light.  I suffered a broken left shoulder, elbow, some ribs, hip,and ankle. Dislocated my left knee too. It was other internal injuries that nearly did me in. If not for my orthopedic doctor wife being in the ER operating room, they would have probably pronounced me dead on two separate occasions. She kept telling them to "zap" me one more time. Spent several weeks in a medically induced coma healing. Took me 18 months before I could swing a club to any degree of scoring well. Took another 18+/- months to consistently break into the high 70s. Before the wreck I was a solid 6 hndcpr. Shot pars of 70, 71, and 72s when at the top of my game. Will never, ever see that again. Even today I play with some degree of discomfort most of the time. Pretty much had to start over from square one with my game. Now I am switching from a right, to a left left handed swing because my right wrist, with all the pins, and screws in it, won't be able to handle the club impact much longer. Just another personal challenge to be able to continue playing this goofy game. Glad to know you are still playing. Kudos to you and your mental toughness.

Normal drives are around 250 - but hit one back wind and perfect contact 297. Rolled onto the centre of the green on a short par 4. Next longest about 285, but nothing else close!

I've had a few that I wasn't able to GPS measure that were in the 315 range, but... the furthest GPS measured drive I've hit was this year, just a few weeks ago.

It was on the par 5 12th hole at Palisades Country Club in Charlotte, NC.  This is a right-to-left dogleg, a little downhill from the tee to the fairway.  I took an aggressive line at the corner and smashed my drive.  It held that line and drew around the corner.  My buddy said that there was no way it stayed safe and that it had to have been in the woods.  I didn't hear it hit anything, and I was confident that it was safe.  When we got up there, my ball was in the middle of the fairway and I had an 8 iron into the green.  The drive was measured at 309 yards.

I could hit a small bucket of balls and not get another one within 20 yards of that spot... but, it felt great!

For the sake of comparison... I keep a spreadsheet to calculate my average drive and it's only 235 (Game Golf has my average drive at 234)... so to get one like that felt really good.

The longest I ever hit was just over the green on a par 4 that was 300 to the center... so maybe 310. That was quite a way downhill, and in firm conditions. It was also back when I used a baseball grip and swung out of my shoes. I haven't hit a drive within 40 yards of that length in years.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
