My fiancé and I park in the driveway and the street and don't use our garage and now that winter is approaching and I won't be able to golf I want to be able to make an indoor practice area. I'd like to have a putting area that will double as a pitching and chipping station and have a net station set up with some type of launch monitor. I'm not looking to break the bank on a launch monitor so I was looking at the es14. For those of you that do have it, does the iPhone app show the ball flight? And also, is it possible for this product to work in a garage setting?

There was a thread about the ES14 not too long ago. http://thesandtrap.com/t/78694/es14-what-is-it All it really does is measure ball speed and clubhead speed. The rest of the info is calculated (not measured) based on the club you tell it you're hitting. Still a useful tool but it won't give you any indication of ball flight.

P.S If you have a garage and it's too cold to golf you should park your car in there. No point it ruining your car's battery, using extra gas to warm it up in the morning, etc, etc when you have a perfectly good garage. Simply pull the car out for when you want to practice then put it back when you are done.

I'd be careful swinging in a garage unless you can fully swing without trying to avoid joists, if you have them,  and any other low hanging stuff. I set up a station in my garage a few years ago with 10 foot ceilings (finished). I didn't realize it but I developed this weird abbreviated follow through over the winter and it took a while to undo it. After that I limited it to less than full swing practice and usually just to satisfy the jones as a I watched football on snowy days when I couldn't make to the indoor range.

I just rearranged  my garage to try and  fit in a practice area.  I was thinking the same thing. That I'd have to be very careful with my swing to make it work.   Maybe it would be best to just go play the simulators at the range this winter.

Agreed.   Similarly, I developed a slower swing by practicing in a confined area.   However, such area is still good for practicing chipping, pitching, and less than full swing.

i cant stop thinking about this as well. dont want to lose my swing over the winter and have that month of getting back into the swing of things...literally. Don't know if there is a range that has any indoor options near me so i am out of luck with that. im pretty sure my garage will give me enough space to release my full swing though so hopefully i don't shorten subconsciously. Hope to see some pictures of others peoples set ups.

also are there any particular mats that people recommend hitting off of? maybe i can grow some turf in my garage over the winter. haha

Sometimes a break is good. Last winter I didn't push it just played and practiced when I could. I played some of the best golf ever (for me) during that time. Not much rust coming out of winter and I felt fresh.

Any suggestions for someone who is likely to buy a house (with a garage) in the next, say, year and a half, to look for if "golf practice area" is something they want to have?  I'm also debating using a bedroom for it and let the workout area go in the garage instead.

The ability to swing without having to worry, especially on the follow-through, is big to me.  I should measure the ceiling in my apartment at the moment, but I have trouble doing any full-speed swings with anything higher than a wedge.

Actually I remembered there is a golf facility nearish my house. Indoor simulators, like 8 outdoor heated tee boxes. So that's nice!

def a pitching chipping and putting thing going on in my garage over the winter

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
    • Generally speaking, extended warranties are a terrible deal and should almost always be avoided. They are a huge profit center for the companies that offer them, which should tell you almost everything you need to know about how much value most consumers get when purchasing them.  This is correct, and the old adage applies - only buy insurance when you can't afford the loss. This usually doesn't apply to most consumer goods.  To your second question, no I don't believe the offer is fair. They are replacing it, but it is not being replaced at "no cost to you". Since the amount being disputed (over $500) is non-trivial, I would probably push the issue. Don't waste your time on the phone with a customer service agent or a supervisor. They have probably given you all they have the authority to do. Rather, I would look at the terms of your agreement and specifically legal disputes. The odds are you probably agreed to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute. The agreement will outline what steps need to be followed, but it will probably look something like this.  1. Mail the Nordic Track legal department outlining your dispute and indicate you are not satisfied with the resolution offered.  2. Open up a case with the AAA (American Arbitration Association), along with the required documentation. 3. Wait about 4-5 weeks for a case to be opened - at which point someone from Nordic Track's legal department will offer to give you the new model at no cost to you.  They certainly don't want to spend the time and energy to fight you over $500. 4. Enjoy your new Nordic Track at no cost to you. I recently entered binding arbitration against a fairly large and well known company that screwed me over and refused to make it right. In my demand letter, I made a pretty sizeable request that included compensation for my time and frustration. Once it hit their legal department, they cut me a check - no questions asked. It was far cheaper to settle with me than to send their legal team to defend them in the arbitration.
    • I never thought of looking at it on multiple purchases like you said.  Yes, the extended may help me on 1 or 2 items but not the other 5 or 6.
    • Day 84 - Forgot to post yesterday, but I did some more chipping/pitching.    Back/neck were feeling better today, so I did a much overdue Stack session.
