I've been Playing Golf for: 25 years

My current handicap index or average score is:4

My typical ball flight is: weak right

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: straight weak and right


 

 

Vi eos:  Im trying to get more clubhead speed without swinging out of my shoes is there a secret? This one was 112 mph out of balance..

This swing was 96 mph in balance and probably a decent shot. How can I get the heat with losing my balance is there any timing drill or anything you can see in my swing to make it a little better?

Umm, stop swinging on a folded up carpet?

I would say the carpet is causing you to be on your heels a bit. That is why you fall forward on the shot. Your balance is off. Try to get a bit more balance equal between the balls of your feet and the heel.

It also looks like you overswing and it is causing you to tip towards the target. This can cause a counter tilt in the downswing which can also cause balance issues.

It looks like you do a lot of arm lifting. I would focus on turning the hips sooner in the backswing to get you to feel like you have finished the backswing sooner. A lot of people tend to move their arms too much compared to the lower body. This can cause people to overswing because they now have to get their turn in, but their arms have moved a ton already.

Image on the left, better stopping point.

Image on the right, overswinging and your head is now turned and it has started to move towards the garage door (target). You can see how your head has lifted up, and your face is not facing way from the ball more.

You also come out of your spine tilt at impact.

Image on the left, you at address.

Image on the right, your head has moved away from the ball. Your butt as moved away from it's position at start up. Stay in that tilt more and get that left hip to be past that red line more. Meaning, your hips need to be more open at impact and stay in your tilt better.

Fixing up your backswing will help this out a lot. Having your head lift up due to your backswing doesn't help.

Also in your comments below the videos you mention wanting to swing faster. If you get your body to work better and more athletically then you will gain speed, distance and balance. Right now your swing is causing you to lose balance and speed.

Check the weight on the right foot at the top -- looks like it might be on the outside.

At impact (pic above), you may have a little too much weight on the back foot since it appears flat on the ground.

At impact (pic above), I think your lower body could  be more open, and that may get your shoulders slightly more square.

I agree with this.

I think it can actually be pointless to analyze a practice swing because it is normally so different from a swing where you are hitting balls.

I would say the carpet is causing you to be on your heels a bit. That is why you fall forward on the shot. Your balance is off. Try to get a bit more balance equal between the balls of your feet and the heel.

Niice I do see this however a tighter more braced swing only seems to slows my swing down I rely on my longer swing for power, but it's obviously causing and over rotation a bit making me fall away from the target at impact. My body doesn't seem to want to swing like the pro's with minimal hip turn and a big shoulder turn partly because I hurt my back years ago. This is the same swing I use at the driving rang the carpet has no effect I swing out side,inside and hit 300 balls a week minimum I also play a ton. Should I widen my stance or narrow it to get a more coiled swing? I honestly don't see anything wrong with a longer arm swing it's about timing right because my good drives are high draws 285 yards what can I do to fix this?

I'm really liking this depiction here regardless of my arm, swing and a little movement what can I do to have my chest more towards the target? I see this as the the toe hook problem I have followed by weak misses straight and to the right. I think the ability to rotate though is important are you saying this is the direct result of over body rotation on the back swing if so how can I fix this without having a swing that's short and to tight?

here is an extreme example of how a conventional swing can produce power. I see this and it seems to throw conventional teaching out the window right? His swing is long he falls away from the target and kinda comes out of it yet he hits it 340 yards just warming up. Can this prove that the driver swing is different than say a 5 iron shot?

Something like this. Having said that the first thing I would address would be for things to work on a steeper inclination, hips are turning level to the ground. This will simplify some pieces on the downswing. Would like to see a face-on swing.

Great swing but i'm not 6 feet and Jason day my back could deal with that strain at impact. I love watching his swing though wish I could do that.

I made 2-3 observations about his swing that you might try ... only if you want.

Look at his right foot, and look at your right foot through the swing. Even though he looks to get on the right toe early instead of rolling the instep.

Look at his hips opening ... look at yours.

You lift your arms ... don't.

The post above where you imply that everyone is wrong because this guy is swinging for the fences ---- that guy is swinging for the fences! Some people have talent and can keep it in play. Some people don't have talent but are gorillas who can't keep it in play. Which are you?

Oh man this is funny-You want instruction specific to your body type but it's fine for you to post general videos in people's swing threads telling them to just copy Jordan Spieth. More learning, less telling Mike.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that pros have minimal hip turn.. On the contrary I would venture to say that they make a full hip turn and a full shoulder turn.. Don't be fooled by terms like the "x factor" as that is just silly.. Also, it has been shown over and over again that the swing without the ball is rarely the swing with a ball, unless you are the exception to the rule.. Why not go ahead and post a video with a ball and compare? Finally, my advice is to not be defensive in your own my swing thread.. Remember, people took the time out of their day to give you advice, being defensive about one part of your game or another is silly because the whole point of you making this thread is for people to tell you what is wrong with your swing and not how great you are.. It's great that you are hitting high draws of 285.. But maybe if you start fixing some of the issues with your swing you will "miss" less and maybe the 285 will start being 295 or more? I have had my fair share of disagreement with some of the guys on here and that's expected in a forum, but when it comes to instruction I have to give it to them.. They know what they are talking about.

    • Thank you, currently I only had the 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons in the bag. I was never finding myself in a situation to use the 4 and 5 so I dropped those a while ago. The 60W is what I've been practicing with the most in the back yard, but that's only with short chipping. I don't think I've ever practiced hitting my wedges at 80% - 100% apart from yesterday. Maybe I should be doing that more. Generally I would be using a 9 iron if I was out about 75 yards or so. I am not really sure I understand your mention of the 60W and 3H. Aren't these going to be giving me completely different results? Unfortunately I am not able to adjust the loft on the hybrids I have. I looked into the Shot Scope H4 you suggested and this seems really neat and handy, however I am struggling to understand how it works. Am I correct in assuming it doesn't track the ball distance until you hit the ball a second time? Say I drive from the tee and walk up to my ball, tag the next club and hit the ball. Is it at this point when I tag my next club while standing next to my ball that is knows the distance? Thank you, I am going to give the local shop a call and check their prices and see what they can offer.
    • Do you know what their handicaps are? The handicap system isn't perfect and given the higher variance from higher handicaps, I think low handicap players would be expected to win maybe 60% of their matches? I'm not exactly sure what that number is and it will vary with the handicap difference, but if they're generally very low handicaps, then they might be at 60% likely to win a game. Given it's 16 vs 16, that's a lot of games to win. If it's 60%, then that's around an 80% chance that they'll win a given match. At 80% chance of winning, 21 wins in a row is about 1 in 108 times. Pretty unlikely, but not unheard of. It's pretty sensitive to what that individual win percentage is too. If it's 65%, then 21 wins is about 1 in 9. If it's 55%, then 21 wins is 1 in about 5,700. Clearly it's not as simple as this because that win likelihood is going to change match to match as they play lower handicap teams or higher handicap teams, but I don't think it's a "yes they're cheating" thing at all.
    • I'll be honest, the only reason the 2 iron was in my bag is because I tend to hit the ball into the tree's fairly often. And I was using it to help me keep the ball very low to get out of the tree's while avoiding getting much loft to hit branches. I guess I can drop the 3H as well. Would it be wise to give a higher loft fairway wood a try as well, something like a 26 degree? I believe there is only one golf shop where I live that has a golf simulator and trainer. I see they offer free fitting with a purchase from the fitter. I'll have to check how much they charge without a purchase, I've read a few stories about fitters on this forum that just wanted to sell the person the most expensive clubs and that kind of deters me a bit. They do offer lessons as well. I'll give them a call and ask them a bit more about these services. Thank you!
    • Here is a description of all the programs:  Programs & Training Programs and Training TheStack is a personal swing-speed trainer for golfers. Initially, each golfer is piloted through a series of swing speed tests to generate a force-velocity profile of their current swing. Qualitative data is... I think cruiser is meant for maintaining speed and flex can do more than that. But I'm just basing that on the descriptions that I linked.  
    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.
