On average, I fix 2 - 4 ball marks per hole with metal divot repair tool.  It became a habit like putting on a seat belt.

I have 3 or 4 in my golf bag, and always fix my mark and a couple more.  If you're a member of USGA, they'll send you a new one every  spring, along with a hat and a new copy of the rules.  Mine are all the 2-prong variety, and I don't think I've bought one for decades.

I've only belonged for five years at the basic level, but I've never received a repair tool. (Not that I need one--I'm still using the same three I've found on courses over the years.)

How often do you use a divot tool?

What is a reasonable price for a high end divot tool? Ex. Brass or Aluminum made

Does anyone else find it annoying when your group doesn't fix their divots?

What kind of divot tool do you have? Why do you have it!?

I use one Ever time my ball leaves a mark on the green.

A lot of courses give the plastic ones away free in hopes that you will use it. As far as cost, anywhere from free to $25. I paid $10 for the one I'm currently using.

Yes I find it very annoying when someone does not fix their ball marks.

I have the switchblade type with a ball marker on it. I like it because it fits nice in my pocket with the forks being retracted.

How to repair a pitch mark

Interesting because the sign in the pro shop on one of the courses I play. Says to not repair a mark that way. It says the put the forks on the outside of the mark and push away from the mark so the forks are heading back towards you. With the top of your tool going towards the mark.

do it the way shown in the video.  that is the correct way.  do NOT stick the pitch mark tool in and then pull up the crater.

This. I can always tell when someone fixed it by trying to pull up, because it leaves a nasty brown spot on the green even if it may look flat.

The better question is "Why wouldn't you use a tool to repair your pitch marks?"  When used correctly, a simple stamped metal tool with 2 flat tines does the best job.  Round tines tear more when pushing the turf toward the center of the crater, and a tee tears worse than a 2 pronged tool.

But any attempt at repair is better than none at all.

I have a single prong tool from a local private club that I always carry. They give one to everybody when they play there because they want you to use it. I find that the single prong tool with a recessed thumb area to be the best tool because it promotes the correct action to make the best repair.

Yeah but the single prong is more likely to tear than push. Imho

Did you read what I said? I said nothing about pulling up the crater. I have been fixing ball marks for 40 plus years. I think I know what I'm doing.

That may be true, but lots of guys who have been playing for that long do NOT know how to do it correctly.  I see more doing it wrong than right on any given day.

Lee Trevino uses the toe of his putter to tamps the ball mark back into shape and then taps down anything sticking up. I sometimes do that, but mostly I use a two prong tool where the prongs are close together. Supposedly it is better than the wider ones. If you pull on the edges it rips the root structure out and then takes longer to heal.

I had a pro at a course once tell me to fix the ball mark with my putter rather than a tool. It prevents people from prying up with the tool, so he prefers that players on his course do it that way. You use the toe of your putter in a circle around the mark, tapping the turf back into place before pressing down.

What's the best method to repair a divot where the ball has embedded so deeply that it tears the grass and creates a crater so that the dirt is exposed and the green is torn and bunched up against the ball?

I think it's covered at http://lakeviewcc.com/turfcare/etiquette/repairing_ball_marks.php .

If you use that massive thing, I'm calling you out as an irresponsible golfer.

LOL...naaaaa......Total BS.   You can't even see the "business end" of the tool.   Nice try!

Bull. I know the type, and they're bad. Unless you've shaved it down to be really narrow, thin, and pointy, it's a bad tool.

P.S. The graphic isn't mine, and so yes, the spelling of "unacceptable" is unacceptable to me, too.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
