You forgot all the slow motion drills.:-D.

I do this at the start of every range session. If you are going through 30 balls in the time it takes for him to warm up, then I don't understand how you could be practicing effectively? I hit a lot of balls, but I never miss my warm up routine and slow motion drills at the beginning even if I end up leaving a pile of 50 balls behind by the end of my range session. It takes me about 45 seconds per ball when I am just aiming for targets. Some people next to me are hitting 3 balls within that time, and I can't possibly imagine how that could improve their swings. In fact, it takes 1-2 minutes per shot when I am working on my drill swings, and if it bothers other people then too bad. I'm working on improving my swing, not to keep in pace with everyone else at the range.

I always stretch before each practice session.  My bones might snap like kindling.  I try to not groan when I stretch.  I always stray eucalyptus oil on my neck since it is always stiff.  If you ever have a stiff neck, it works wonders.

I start every range session with a consultation with Dr Cold One.

If I start off with too many cold ones my body would do 5S all right, "slow, slurry, stupid, silly and sorry" :-D

That could have been me.  Wait... I wasn't in San Diego today.  :-)  As long as they're not talking, I'm OK.  I had a guy a while ago that had a farting problem.  He ran through the whole scale too.  I was upwind, so I just kept hitting.

My apologies!  I tried to keep them as subtle as I could!

Good analogy. And taking it further... don't you find some ranges don't allow sufficient gaps between the mats?  Sometimes I feel like a horizontal practice swing in the air is going to come close to the guy next to me.

I hate being on the wrong side of a lefty in the stall next to me for this reason; I get worried about one of us hitting the other.

Back to back is the worst, but face to face lefty to rightly is fine. I just shuffle the mats around. . .

I am the guy at the range and on the tee box who has to de-pressurize before teeing off.
this happens on most the holes, it is who I am and what I eat. I dont hide it, I embrace it and I make it enjoyable for those around me.

I used to be super uptight on the course and came to conclusion that I just had to be relaxed to be a better golfer.

Now people who carry on conversations on their hands free device while at the range is something I could do without.

What other people do on the range doesn't really bother me, except the screaming shank headed my way.  It is a bit odd to be face on with a lefty in the next stall, but I just try and keep my head down and focus on my ball.  Unless it's my daughter, who is lefty.

There is a gentleman at my local range that spends much of his time smoking cigarettes and asking nearby players to watch his swing and point out problems.   He won't interrupt a swing, but he is ready as soon as you take a break.

I will admit that I have caught myself on more than one occasion mumbling about what I think I did wrong during a hit but I don't full blown talk to myself.  I smoke cigars here and there and do my best to be cognizant and polite about where I smoke them (my backyard, on the course sometimes, at a cigar bar/shop), if someone was smoking a bunch at the range that would bother me and I am pretty easy going in general.  That dude would get annoying fast in my opinion.

Last time I was at the range some dad had his kids with him who were hitting golf balls as well.  The boy was not very well behaved, he was arrogant and whinny and talking back to his father quite a bit in a really snarky over privileged way.  I thought it was amusing and sad at the same time.

only thing that bothers me is hearing this guy that sets up at the far end of the range every day giving blatantly false info to people.  i think hes the self-proclaimed guru at the range.

I assume we all have our days at the range when something inside is bothering us, not the golf, and we show our frustration. I mumble to myself, take breaks, and try to let the air out of my mind on the range, just focus on the task at hand, and enjoy the surroundings.

What bothers me? Not much. I find the range amusing for the most part. I am OCD about getting on one end of the range and being alone.

I am only bothered with brash, loud, young children moving around near me (which is why I enjoy the end of the range), and fathers beating down their kids with golf instructions and scolding them. I usually take a break, and resolve the conflict about wanting to tell the father to quiet down, and let the child enjoy himself -- but I don't. I can see some of these 7 yr olds who swing better than Jason Day at a comparable age burning out eventually. My children did and do not like the range; they like to play the game. So at the range, the 9 yr old does his 30 min of full swing, chips and putts, and then when he's bored, I hand him the phone. I don't do much instruction.

An older guy probably nearly twice my age dropping the f-bomb after every swing behind me. Meanwhile two older guys come in and see me hitting balls and gave me over inflated compliments about my ball striking. I strike a nice clean ball but I'm not Dustin Johnson! Probably annoyed him even more he got quite angry with himself after that.

I was conscious of him behind me but still wanted to be friendly to the elder statesman who introduced themselves. He was swearing well before they came but he was clearly far too wound up to get enjoyment.

Maybe the second. time I went to the range it was it was fairly busy and there were about five children age 7-10 such was fine they were doing what they were supposed to with their Calloway Jr. Sets lined up behind them but their families were sitting about 30 yards back at the out side tables all with drinks in there hands shouting instruction and making arrogant remarks about any and all of the other golfers at the range. It reminded me of the pool halls I used to frequent where the drunks would bring their kids in and let them roll balls around on the tables all night while they got loaded lol. I thought it was classless but amusing.   Other than that noise or other people practicing don't really bother me.  Our range has a full service bar a drink patio and a mini golf course right behind the range that can get pretty loud late in the evening when I usually find my way there.

Funny a lot of people blew off my original complaint,. But I do see we all have our own pet peeves at the range....

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

I have a hard time relating to a lot of the complaints on here.  I live in a pretty rural area we have 4 courses with in driving distance and tho none of them are 5*, none of them are overly crowded either.  Our range is seldom stacked with people, unless you go there between 5-6 there is plenty of real estate.  The more I read the more I've begun to consider my self pretty lucky.

It's funny that your exact situation happened to me yesterday and the person asked if he could set up a camera between our stalls.

I responded with if I could do the same. We both laughed and did what we needed to do to try to improve our games. I paused for him to adjust his camera, and he did the same for me.

The way I look at it is we're there to work on stuff or hit targets or whatever else.

You might consider hitting into a net at home if you don't like these "distractions". You can't really get away from them on the course, so I don't have any suggestions for that.

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
