I just bought a Callaway X2 Hot driver and have this question:

Is there a need to test the adjusting screw before every use to make sure it's stayed tight, or is that a non-issue?

Thanks!

Once you tighten it with the wrench to where it clicks, you don't need the wrench again until you want to adjust it. Shouldn't ever come loose.

The biggest con to an adjustable driver is the tendency to tinker with it expecting performance to increase just that little bit and then making it worse.  For me, an non-adjustable driver makes a lot more sense, provided you are consistent in your swing and the club fitted for your specs

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Soft 500 golf ball

Wait a sec ... but if you set it to a poor setting, you can adjust it back. Once you make a poor decision on a glued driver, you're stuck with a 50% loss in value, and more.

And swings change. you gain more speed, are more consistent, your setup changes, and within a certain range of loft, you can make adjustments. Not so with the glued family.

The weights in the head, whether perimeter weighting or weighting can also help with balance adjustments, and you can place more weight towards your miss, which happens to expand the sweetspot to that side.

And the ability to change shafts does help - I've got 4 shafts and have narrowed it down to two in terms of preference. One is 55g, the other is 65g.

So I see little con to adjustable, and lots of pros.

The key is finding the head that mystically appeals to your mind and body, in the right weight, with the adjustments you need, and fine tune with the shaft.

mode it's a conspiracy :

ajustable clubs are useless. they are only made so the club industry can retreive shafts on unsold items.

personnaly I believe this though. I have an ajustable RBZ S2. it's useless to ajust, it will only give false info.

The main thing for me is the ability to switch shafts easily. Other than that, IDK.

Not for me, I use to have a driver in which I can tinker whether I want it to be open, neutral or close, and whether I wanted to change the loft or not... Half the time I hit, I wanted to change the setting on it for how I am hitting that day at the range....Caused toooo many problems..

I tinker too much as is ...and to have a club in which I can tinker more just causes too many distractions. I'm a simple man, need simple gear :)

I know I am in the minority here but I hit better with a non adjustable drivers. In fact my best club is a Cobra S3 from years ago. Since then I have tried probably 4 or 5 adjustable drivers, went through the fitting process on trackman and the range and never hit them as well as I do with the S3. I sold all my adjustable drivers and just use the club I hit the best, the S3. Friends I play with all have adjustable drivers and they are always tinkering with the setting, they really don't see much of an improvement, if any at all. IMHO it is more about getting a proper swing down then it is moving a little weight around. My teaching pro can hit any driver you give him, at any setting and he'll hit it straight 280+. He tells me to stick with what works and forget all the hype (and by the way, his shop sells adjustable drivers). Hell, he is in business to make money like everyone else.

Having said that, if you like adjustable drivers more power to you.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
