I keep stats all the time. In fact, I'm still helping to write some software that keeps stats the way I'd like.

If you don't keep stats, you'd be well advised to check out Dave's first column

Interesting.

I dont keep any stats at the moment but have been seriously considering it for a while.Better get my ass in gear and get some software i think.

Be interesting to see if what i percieve are strong or weak points of my game are actually just that.Numbers dont lie i guess and its difficult to ignore it if its clear in black and white.

If I'm alone I do, but in a group it is too cumbersome to try and keep score and stats.

I do the same thing. Keep stats when playing alone but it is time consuming when playing in a group.

I had this same problem when I first started but I do one of two things. Either I will keep my own scorecard in my back pocket for my own use or I will get a scorecard after the round is done and fill out a scorecard with the stats on them. This only takes me about 2-3 minutes to do. My habit now is to just grab an extra scorecard and keep it with me.

Give it a try again and see if you have any luck. If you are serious about your game and getting better, it will be worth the hassle. I promise.

Fairways and Greens.

I do the same thing. Let me work up a quick sample... or just take a picture of one of my scorecards. I'll edit this post in a sec when I get it...

OK, here goes. The top number is the score for the hole, and the arrows indicate whether I hit the fairway or not (up is yes, left or right is a miss in that direction). The small number next to the score is the # of putts for that hole. Currently, I count putts from the fringe, but I've gotta stop doing that. The next number down - 10, 10, 20, 20, etc. - is the distance I had for my first putt. When I enter this into my software, it lets me determine things like average distance of putts for up-and-downs, sand saves, or approach shots (when I GIR). The next two lines down I could condense into one: up-and-down/sand save, then GIR. I mark GIR when I get a GIR, otherwise I leave it blank. I mark "UD" or "SS" when I have an up-and-down attempt or a sand save attempt. I put a line through it when I'm unsuccessful. That's it. Doesn't take much and really can give you a LOT of information about your round.

I'm working with a friend of mine on some golf statistics software for the desktop. Of course, it only applies if you've got a Mac, and it'll be out in a few months - after my golf season is over, probably - but it's coming. Should cost around $19.

You people and your Macs! I've been keeping my stats and it has helped me see my problem areas like you guys said. It's a very good learning tool.

Thanks for the plug here kiwidave. I'm glad you like the site and that it is easy to use.

I just joined this site. If anyone wants any information about my site just email or PM here.

Sometimes I use my SkyGolf GPS and the SkyTracker. Easy to mark off the important stats and it's also easy to keep track of all clubs you hit with - added bonus from using a GPS - you get realistic yardage for all the clubs.

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
    • They've been chuckling since they hooked the shark. I think Greg doesn't realize the jokes on him.
