It has just  occurred to me that not knowing  of a one-ball rule in a tournament is not so much a general ignorance of the rules but more a failure to read the conditions of the tournament which you might expect to have been handed out to the competitors.  Carelessness.

I've read that the Tour players get such information given out prior to each of their competitions, and many don't bother to read it.  It has led directly to some penalty assessments in the past.  I'm fairly amazed that a player couldn't be bothered to read something which directly affects the size of his paycheck.

Imo, the one-ball condition has outlived its purpose(s), if it ever had any.

How so?  It seems as if we have so much more knowledge and technology now that would make it possible for players to have several balls to use with varying spin and flight characteristics.  I look at the one ball rule as akin to the "can't adjust or modify the playing characteristics of a club" .  One you have picked your equipment, changes in club and ball performance should occur because of your skill, not your equipment, IMO.

It's still :offtopic: for this thread. If anyone wants to discuss this again, I suggest we find and revive one of the existing threads.
