For the discussion of @mythbuster's claims that "if you can find a perfect, neutral setup position , the swing is then automatic."

It has to make your swing "automatic" too, though.

Absolutely.  I already have any number of setup positions, neutral or not, that don't result in an "automatic" swing!

Heck, my getting out of bed in the morning without injuring myself isn't automatic.  No way a golf set-up can make the millions of muscle contractions that make make up a golf swing into an "automatic".

On a serious note, I accept something I believe I read in the Hogan book.  A good grip or set-up or backswing doesn't guarantee good contact or good shots.  Bad grip, bad set-up, or bad backswings can all make it much less likely that you'll make good contact and hit good shots.

Define "automatic" in the OP's view. My swing is automatlc once I start it from my set up position. It's not necessarly good or bad but it's automatic in a non stop sort of way.

I may argue to the death with @mvmac about Jack's brain capabilities in a 100+ golfers body (:-D), but other than that I will take his advice and @iacas swing advice any day of the week as they are proven instructors and golfers.  You can't fake it in golf when telling people what to do otherwise they will ask you to post a swing video. Where is your my swing thread @mythbuster?  If what you say is true the professionals and low handicappers on this site will be able to verify it easily.

My swing can be pretty automatic after I set up. That doesn't mean it's necessarily going to be a good one if I let it be completely "automatic" and don't put any thought or effort into it.

This is a unique idea. Quite interesting to allow a troll to have his own thread to post his hilarious ideas. Hell, I'm in. Come on @mythbuster let's dance. Neutral position is attained by.............?

Here's some of the stuff he's said in the Shoulder Turn thread. Basically if you get into this certain position you "automatically" can make a great backswing.

19 hours ago, mythbuster said:

whether you push down the left shoulder or not is immaterial as long as you are in a neutral setup position .i know you dispute this, as you keep going on about how you think you know what neutral actually is.

i will repeat this again -if you can find a perfect, neutral setup position , the swing is then automatic.

when i bend down towards the ball, i purposefully allow my right pelvis region muscles to "collapse" somewhat. this causes the spine to slope to the right, but also the hips to turn marginally to the left and the chest to turn even more to the left.  you must under no circumstance try and keep the shoulders artificially pointing at the target, as this locks things up.

after that, you are in total equilibrium,  - what i mean by that is that you can do all or none of the vast plethora of unnecessary acrobatic antics "showered" upon us  in modern day  golf teaching, and still get the same result- a very nice swing, as this setup is ,i feel, the "holy grail" to  a small section of the golfing fraternity, burdened with inflexibility issues .

ok, at least we have liftoff.

we have genuine discussion and that is why i am here. i am only trying to get debate, not opinionated opinion.

anyway, i would like you all to consider this, but i know i am only a lowly 15 handicapper who hasn't written a book, but please be cautious as to your reaction as i could actually be your savior of the over hyped golf swing .

anyway, i only stumbled on this miracle swing since i joined this forum, so i must give credit to all those that questioned my antics, as it actually forced me to think outside the typical nonsense that is bandied about.

the fact is this- GOLF is a VERY SIMPLE GAME, but is convoluted to such a level of idiocracy that it almost defies belief.

so let's get to my setup routine in more detail- if you bend down to pick something up from the ground, you will either collapse your right side or left side near your pelvis depending on whether you used your left or right hand.

you will also notice, which is absolutely critical to a golfing setup, that your chest will want to turn to the left if you are right handed. you must not try and alter this turning during a golfing setup, even though your chest is about 10 to 15% to the left and you are about 70% weight on the right foot.

if you get into this natural position, then the best way to get max "whip" is to 'chop" at the start of the backswing, rather than the conventional 'garbage" that is taught en masse.

have a look at the wrist motion of the specialist long drive champs if you have reservations.

by the way, in  closing, maybe i should write a book .

at least with my teachings i know that i am genuinely helping all those unfortunate golfing illiterates.

I routinely troll and make things up. Please use my posts for your own amusement, and little else.

I call Bullshit. Post a video of this miraculous set up and automatic swing. If you don't, you are certainly a troll and your handicap is also most likely bullshit.

So simple in fact is golf that you somehow are still a 15 handicap?
