So Winnipeg finally got snow last night...How do you handle golf during the winter season?

Only one course here was open until last weekend. For the last two weeks I've just been hitting a PW in a field closeby that isnt busy and not dangerous for houses. However, the snow finally came so even that field practise is now done. We have an indoor golf dome, but the prices are pretty high so Im thinking I visit 1 time a month. Another range on the far side of the city has outdoor heated stalls, but I feel like practising in a bulky jacket might not be beneficial.

Just wondering what other posters here do for winter?

Golf withdrawal is one of the reasons I've come to hate the winter. We still probably have 4-6 weeks before snow closes all the courses, but it'll be here soon enough.

I will continue to hit balls on and off in the winter as long as the range is open, but only on days I can do so without a bulky jacket, generally when the temperature is well above freezing. I also will take swings at home with a golf mirror in the living room, occasionally driving my family crazy.

Most importantly, I will plan any vacation I can to get to warmer climates, and immediately plan our buddies golf trip (early spring), both giving me something to look forward to during the short, dark days.

Finally, I'll spend the next 4-5 months mumbling to myself, and to anyone who'll listen, about how much I hate winter, and how I fantasize about moving somewhere where I can play year round.

Well, it rained steadily for the past three week, now it's clear but too cold even for range work on the heated range. The wind is from the north and it blows the radiant heat away. I can't even get warmed up. My nose gets like ice. Sorry, folks, wind chill is in the 30s right now. I'm done until it warms up again. 

So in the winter we play golf on the XBox One.

I have a membership at a golf simulator.  It's not golf but it keeps the swing oiled and the social aspect is a lot of fun (leagues and such).

The last of the courses in my area are closing shop as we speak.  I've got a ton of course closing emails in the last 2 weeks. :-(

According to the forecast, Sunday will be a rather inauspicious day. It figures to be the first day it is actually too cold to play. The weather guessers are saying a high of 33. Based on prior experience, fine motor function goes to hell around 40 degrees. An entire off day down the crapper and the knowledge of more to come. I'm salty about it.

I don't really have anything other than waiting for it to get warm enough. Ohio winters slack up enough that we'll have some decent days mixed in there. The first couple shut-in days are the worst.

In CO we can play a year around as long as there is no snow on the ground. 

In fact most of the time snow does not stick around for too long here unlike the NE.

If it snows more than 2 feet around here I'm going skiing of boarding. Should have a good year for it after a 6 year dry spell . .cross fingers.

You should buy a house here in San Diego!

Seriously why isn't there a thriving indoor golf range? I remember one in Seattle that was nice. And TopGolf in Texas is probably a good alternative ..

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

I was living in Virginia but commuting to Cleveland so was getting some winter golf if VA had a good winter. Otherwise it was just depressing. Took a job in Georgia which is sure going to help. Our facility has an old golf course as part of our property. Not maintained as a course but still mown. I plan on hitting some balls at lunch on some of the nice days. Was doing that after work but not enough daylight now.

Got a couple of domes within 15 min drive so I am covered.

I set up a mat and a net in my garage several years ago when I lived in the rainy North West.  Even though we can play all year long here in TX, I still use my mat and net all the time.  I got a Real Feel golf mat and a Net Return net - definitely two of my more solid golf purchases.

We had our snow here  in Fredericton earlier this week and since all but 1 exec 9 hole course was open anyway there is no big withdrawal and I am into the usual winter funk.The snow has all melted for now but we know that we may get green Christmases but we ALWAYS have white Easters.  One of my golf partners is a snowbird from the 30th of October to the near end of April. A lot of members of my club are snowbirds as well both for Florida and for Arizona too.  (comes from a military career stationing them in Edmonton Cold Lake and Esquimalt.)  I will get a Southern excursion started this coming year. May become a snowbird myself and end the wintertime blues.

      I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

      Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
