NJ needs to step up its game. I never heard of Vic Ghezzi.

It would be cool to see only the best Amateur's only, both in Men & Women, also.

Great history of many of the games greatest.   ;-)

My Uncle declares my love of golf comes from distant a relative in the family from Illinois. Which should make me distant cousins with Jay Haas and have a distant nephew, Bill Haas.

It's interesting you don't see more great players from NJ or NY with all the great golf history and courses they have.

The people also didn't consider depth of filed when they picked Mickey Wright for best player from California ;-)

(I also get that they were trying to be a little "shocking" with some of their picks.)

What's interesting about this list is how many states there are whose best players are either complete unknowns or golfers whose accomplishments are not all that special.

There is simply no competing with people who grew up with year round golf weather. More proof that practice far outweighs talent.

Jack Nicklaus is from Ohio. Arnold Palmer is from PA. It gets pretty cold and snowy there.

Few pros come from the north and those that do don't tend to stick around for very long. If you want to list every individual example ok, but I don't see how it undermines my point.

ojI had the opportunity to write an article for Bleacher Report a few years ago - they wanted a slide show format, and this was my idea. I ended up turning it down as I didn't have the time and for me it was just for fun, but I have my notes and initial ideas.

I had a more stringent methodology, and criteria. I said something like they had to relocate before the age of 21 to be considered from that state, or if they attended college and then stayed there they could be considered from the new state, so Woods was from California. Which I think he should have been here, but they really wad Wright included.

My rough draft also included honorable mentions up to five, and then ranked the states overall. Texas was number one.

    • I kind of like this interpretation especially if you think about it the unplayable rule would probably put you in a better spot.  using back on the line releief.
    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
