Angry little man syndrome. This guy is a riot. Kinda reminds me of that little kid that would run 100' away then call you names and run when you came after him only to stop when you stopped and start calling you names again. I equate his and Tigers relationship to that of Bugs Bunny(Tiger) and Daffy Duck(Rory). And when Tiger finally finds out what happened, well in the immortal words of Elmer Fudd

I don't know much about the guy but from what I've read recently he is a bone head. His excuse for withdrawing it pretty weak too.

Should Rory get to keep the $170,000 even though he didn't finish? What a bad sport!

Not to mention, Tiger and Couples didn't seem to happy about it.

Angry little man syndrome.>:-

Funny you use the term "little man" because, although I agree, a recent Golf or Golf Digest article was making it sound like he was this burly bouncer-type guy. I remember reading it and thinking "Huh?"

I guess if "pudgy" equals "burly"...

Found the quote I was thinking of, from http://www.golfdigest.com/magazine/2007/11/sabbatini :

"It starts with the walk. Built like a bouncer, Sabbatini leans into a fairway with his head high, his wide back forcing his thick arms to hang outward like a gunfighter packing holstered heat..."

Someone at GD must've owed him a favor.

Yeah, I remember the article about how Sabby was just misunderstood how he was good for the game I believe he was even endorsed by Davis Love. The article looked like a damage control piece put on by his sponsor nike. Looks like they can do all the damage control they want but his foghorn leghorn impression is always going to come out.

sabbatini should be donating most of, or all of his 170k cheque back to the Tiger Woods Foundation. He seems to be someone who has a profound lack of emotional control, which is fuelled by his childish jealousy of Tiger Woods.

Yeah, and to add insult to injury Sabby will not be with Nike next year(Tiger? Did Nike have enough? ???)... He just signed with Adams Golf.

Leaving Nike golf is like leaving Jessica Alba for Janeane Garofalo!

Perhaps, you might amend that to read: " Be vewy, vewy quiet....I'm hunting Sabbatini! Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh!"

What was he thinking? Maybe there's something there we don't know. Maybe his family, which has gotten a bit of bad press, is to blame. And then maybe it really is just Rory being Rory. This poor fellow keeps shooting himself in the foot. And if Tiger is half the man I think he is, he'll say little, step aside and let Rory continue to be Rory; Rory will do the rest by just being himself. Too bad, really. One hates to see such a talented man hurt himself by intemperate behavior. Ah, well........but if the fly continues to irritate the behind of the elephant, who knows? The elephant may decide to simply sit down and squash the fly.

x2 All very good points- I think it'll be interesting to hear Sabbatini's response in the press. All of conflicting stories are an ill-omen, though. I too hope that Tiger stays low key on the subject.

x2

The bummer here is that IF he were forced to give the money back, what happens when another player with shin splints, or some other less-than-serious injury withdraws? What if that player really NEEDED 170k to get his tour card back.

The bummer is that people who use the rules to circumnavigate consequences to bad behavior make it harder for people honestly trying to toe the line.

true, but the tournament's purse is counted as unofficial earnings...

Even if it weren't an unofficial tournament, anyone who makes the cut (or starts a tournament without a cut) and withdraws can get unofficial money equal to last place, I think. Someone - Arron O. maybe? - did it at the Mercedes last year.

So what is your point? I just think he should acknowledge what he did is wrong by giving at least 25 percent of his earnings back, just like the tourney director suggested to the Tour.
I'm not arguing the mechanics of PGA Tour policies.
I mentioned the unofficial money issue because the previous poster noted a situation where someone might need the cash to maintain status.

I was out there Thursday and he was playing like crap and no one following him.

He made 4.5 million this year. He should give the $170K to the Tiger Woods Foundation. Like Monty, Rory is inviting a lot of trouble for himself with his comments and behavior. At least Monty is a real nice guy. Rory... not so much.

That is always the case no matter the circumstances. Those who behave as the young Sabbatini does, make it harder for the rest who behave in a more honest manner, no matter the profession. However, I do believe that that kind of behavior does catch up with one in the end.

What did Monty say? Did I miss something?

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
