All right, I was given a fairly generous Gift Gertificate to Callaway Preowned for the holidays I have decided on a FT-I Driver but, I need some help deciding on some new irons. I am pretty new to the game and have only been playing for about 9 months, I have been playing at least a once week for the last several months and my scores are typically in the 90's. I have never had any type of formal instruction, I know I should, and I have every intention of doing so in the near future. My current clubs are a cheap $250 set of Dunlop Power Lift Clubs. I think they are just standard length and Lie angle

I have read ton of reviews and I am having trouble deciding what might be the best for me. I am trying to decide between the Big Bertha 06 4-PW,SW
Steel Shafts and X-18 4-PW,SW Steel Shaft, even slightly considering the
X-20s. I realize that the big Berthas would probably be better intially but I am wondering if I would quickly want somethings else since I am so new to the game and think that I will progress fairly quickly. I realize that going and getting fitted and demoing clubs would be ideal but since I have to purchase the clubs at Callaway preowned I really would feel bad about wasting a stores time when I know I will not purchase from them. I am 6'3" with a 36.5 wrist to floor measurement, should I get clubs that are +.5-+.3/4 longer than standard and should I get them with 1 up lie angle?

Any suggestions of feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I think that you should try the clubs that you want to buy. I was hitting 90's with my old Cobra's, I hit very well my irons, now I changed to the X-20 Tour and now my handicap is lowering.

You should try evreything.

Hey, that sounds like a great gift. Enjoy it. I've had a couple of great transactions with Callaway's pre-owned operation.

I don't have much advice about the irons. You've identified, I think correctly, the main issue in your decision between the Big Berthas and X-18s (or 20s). Good luck. But I would say that I don't think you should feel bad about trying out clubs at another shop. I understand you don't want someone to spend three hours fitting you and get nothing out of it, but there's certainly no harm in hitting balls with a few different irons. Some places will even do a fitting for a fee, so that might be something you could try. Also, and you may really like Callaway irons, so that's perfect, but Callaway Pre-owned does carry some other brands. Again, congrats on the new gear, and good luck.
Sorry about the Callaway card.

Follyforhire offers excellent advise. First things first. Congratulations on receiving a great gift. Callaway makes wonderful clubs, especially for new golfers. My first set of clubs were Callaway Hawkeye VFTs. I loved them. Now, you're right to consider getting fitted. Getting the proper length, lie and shaft flex is really important to your future enjoyment of your time spent practicing and playing. So, go get fitted by a good pro. Trust me on this one. Don't worry about taking advantage of someone. You can always repay them by making from them a future purchase. Also, when you're getting fitted, try hitting some of the clubs you're considering. Give yourself every advantage in making the best selection you can; it will pay dividends in the future, I can assure you. Then, go enjoy your new clubs! Good luck!

My last set was Callaway X-18's and boy I can't say enough good things about them. I have not tried the X-20's, but I was also looking at the X-18's and X-20's and a guy in the proshop here said that other then cosmetics there isn't much difference between the two in terms of performance. So I got the 18's and they are a great set of irons, you won't go wrong with them.

I used to use the Big Berthas and if I was you, I would get the x18s/x20s as they are for slightly better players and I feel that after you get a bit better, they are easier to hit. Thats my 2 cents anyway

X-20s for sure. Not only are they the newest model of the X, but they are the newest model of the X. Point being, Callaway is pretty big on Research and Developement, the newest and bestest is always a good bet with these guys. I think the X20 is going to be around for at least one more season.

Well, here's my thought. I would get the Callaway Fusion because they have served me well as either a beginner's and a transition set.

Here's a bit story. I started golf about a little bit more than a year ago. My first irons were cheap Wilson set, then after a few months using it I felt I needed "real" irons to play with. Being new at that time and also I hadn't been into this forum, I had no idea which irons would fit me. All I know is I didn't want them to be big like Big Bertha and not even as big as X-18. So I did a lot of reading and researches with the tendency toward Callaway, because I'd heard Callaway's best for beginners due to its forgiveness.

Then I spotted the Fusion and really liked its shape. Review said that they're very polite on mis-hits. It's like super forgiveness but in small package for GI irons. So, I went to order new a set from eBay because I just couldn't justify the $1.199 price tag in stores. I got mine for $675 brand new from store display. Yeap, they're genuine and I even called the seller to confirm if he owned brick & mortar shop as he had mentioned before.

I honestly can say the Fusion has helped me from someone who just started to where I'm now with consistent swings. They're easy to use and can serve as transition set from high to low handicappers. I even offered my Fusion to be demo-ed by people I happened to have a conversation with at the range. They're bunch of people from single handicap to double digits. Most of them liked the Fusion.

Why am I using Mizuno now? The reason is solely for thinner sole/topline and mostly because of the soft feel. I know I shouldn't have tried my friend's MP-32 and MP-67. I got hooked with its thin shape and very very soft feel (just can't stress that enough ).

Anyway that's my story and hopefully can provide you as an input/thought in getting the right irons for yourself.

I play a set of Fusions... they are a great set of irons, forgiving, feel is good for a game-improvement club. Perfect for a mid-capper too. You wouldn't be disappointed.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Well,

After hitting a few different clubs, I ended up going with the the Big Bertha 06 4-PW, SW, Iron regular flex shaft, standard length, 1 degree up. I had the chance to hit them for the first time last night at the range and I am really impressed, can't wait to see how they are after playing a few rounds and getting use to them.

Thanks for all of feedback.

    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
