My name is Sean and am 16 years old from the Detroit area. I am a middle handicap player that plays for my high school golf team. I work at a local golf course as a cart attendant and enjoy building custom golf clubs. I am currently getting into shape and would like to find and know golf-specific drills for strength training. My favorite section in Golf Magazine and Golf Digest is the "Whats in the Bag". I love knowing what clubs the players use and what works best for them. My goal is to play golf in college and hopefully play professional golf or become a teaching pro. I haven't ruled out opening my own golf shop and doing custom clubmaking either. I hope to meet new people, learn as much as I can from the golfing world, and bouncing new ideas off of people.

Let me know if anyone has questions about clubheads, shafts, and grips that are available.

I grew up in Rochester and Oxford... which high school do you play for, Adams, Rochester, or one of those other new ones? Also, which course do you work at... maybe you've wiped my clubs off for me?

I think I got into the game from a friend who has a dad who is a teaching pro. I started playing 3-4 years ago and have been SERIOUS about it for the last 2 summers(for the golf team). My parents haven't played in a long time and have learned on my own. My uncle and grandpa used to play, but not anymore. I am a sophomore at Stoney Creek High School(new one)and play for the JV team. I work at Blackheath Golf Club as a cart attendant. I clean clubs(as mentioned) and thats where I make most of my money. I enjoy my clubmaking and find it a lot cheaper than buying OEM clubs and more enjoyable to play with clubs that I made for me that are custom fit.

I played Blackheath about 5-6 times last summer. I like the course, they have a nice twilight special. Why did they cut down all those trees on number 5 (i think)... the one where they came out into the fairway forcing you to hit a draw with the driver or squeeze a 2-iron in there. That hole was great with the trees.

As far as strength training... do drills/exercises that increase flexibility.. .also I use freeweights about 3 times a week and do various things that increase arm strength... especially the forearms. I play hockey and having strong forearms helps both sports. But, for golf flexibility is key. Also, I am 28... so I'm just trying to maintain the strength I had back when I was 21, where as you are proabaly trying to put on a little. what is your home course for Stoney? I had to play Oxford Hills back when I played JV in HS... which is a weird course, front tight, short, and packed together, back is wide open and longer. Plus the course had no bunkers, so I never did get good out of sand until a few years ago. Anyway... good luck.

Thanks for the support and questions. The trees were cut out of number 5 because the ground was a low-lying area and there was standing water under them. Those trees sure did play tougher than what it is now. There is just dirt mounds and balls have been known to plug in them.

I am doing as much as I can in regards to strength training. What are freeweights(or another name for them because I don't know what they are?) I train with most the football team on my own in the weight room and avoid heavy lifting. Do you know of any books or websites that offer good exercises or drills specifically designed for golfers?

The home course for Stoney is Twin Lakes. They have a great practice facility and an awesome 27 holes. We tried out at Stony Creek Metropark and made the cut by .25 a stroke, but had the 3rd best average on the team(8 players). I remember playing Oxford Hills twice in one week, one against Oxford and another against Lake Orion. The course is a weird course and played miserable in rain and sand-filled, freshly airerated greens. I only played the front 9, not the back 9, but it looked good from what I could see.

Thanks for the response.

How did you learn how to build clubs? As I am looking to learn this as well because I have to pay for my clubs, and being able to build my own would save some money, I'm 15.

Depending on where you live, Golfsmith offers FREE clubmaking classes where you make a driver and a 5 iron. But if you don't, Golfsmith offers a large catalog, books, full kits, and DVD's, as well as online videos to building clubs.
1.Go to Golfsmith.com and
2.look under "Clubmaking" and scroll down on the left column
3.Search clubs, view a video, or post on an online forum with your questions.

Clubmaking is very simple and VERY cheap. Only hardware supplies can be used to first start off with. Their clubs are are great quality and fairly priced.Golfsmith and Golfworks are two stores that sell good quality products.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions because I would like to help.

I'm new to this website and i just read your posts...I played a lot last summer at Blackheath. The 25 bucks all you can golf twilight is pretty good. Interesting to find out why they cut out that tree. I used to hate that hole because of that tree but without it makes it too easy..

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
