Jeff Sluman maintains the lead after two rounds at the Memorial but Tiger Woods and others are waiting to pounce.

Jack Nicklaus Waves to the CrowdToday was yet again another emotional cut day on the PGA Tour for Jack Nicklaus. The Memorial Tournament could quite possibly be Jack's last PGA event on American soil. Nicklaus finished his career at the Memorial in a rather disappointing fashion when it comes to scoring. He opened with a 75 and ended today with a 77.

"It will probably close out my golf in the United States in regular tournament golf, more than likely," Nicklaus said. "I may come back here, but I certainly wouldn't plan on it."

First round leader Jeff Sluman, whom opened with a 65 (-7), was able to maintain his position atop the leaderboard in the second round of the Memorial Tournament.

Vijay Singh(+7) was one of many popular players who were on their way home this evening after missing the cut line at +2. The least we can say about Singh's round today is that his birdie on the 18th put him one shot ahead of 65-year-old Jack Nicklaus. Singh only had three birdies the entire tournament. This is the second cut he has missed this year on tour.

John Daly (+3), Players Champion Fred Funk (+6), Davis Love III (+7), and Mike Weir (+7) were among others that failed to make the cut.

Jeff Sluman seemed to have no complaints after a second round score of 71. He was one of few players near the top of the leaderboard whom did not drop any strokes during the last three holes. Sluman missed the green at 17 but followed with an incredible flop shot that found the hole for a birdie. "I hit it pretty solid, just didn't get as much out of it because I didn't hit as close as I needed to," he said. "I obviously am in a pretty good position."

Sluman was briefly caught by Peter Lonard early in the day after Lonard had five straight birdies. Then, his round took a mildly tragic turn after a bogey at 16 and a double bogey at 18 leaving him at 5-under for the tournament. As Erik J. Barzeski stated after the final round of the MCI Heritage; Lonard led, struggled, then regained the lead to win. Lonard has been known to go on birdie streaks and he is definitely one to watch during the weekend.

Tiger Woods had a great second round at Muirfield Village today. He was tied for the lead until missing the 17th green where he posted his only bogey for this tournament. He finished with a score of 68, one shot off the lead. As you may remember, Tiger Woods missed the cut two weeks ago that ended his record cut streak at 142.

"It's kind of nice playing on the weekend," Woods stated humorously.

Woods attacked the pins all day during his second round. He hit a 9-iron within six feet at the 2nd which led to a birdie, then birdied the par-3 fourth, and then hit an amazing 2-iron from 249 yards out to within 12 feet.

Tiger Woods is part of the pack stuck one shot off the lead at 7-under that includes Lucas Glover, Nick O'Hern, Harrison Frazar, and Jonathan Kaye. O'Hern and Frazar were both in position to take the lead until they made costly bogeys at the 18th.

The weather forecast for tomorrow's third round at Muirfield Village looks like it will make for superb playing conditions. There will most likely be clouds in the morning but the sun will make it's appearance in the afternoon. The high for tomorrow is 82&deg F and the low is 65&deg F.

One weird side-note to report today. It seems that everytime Nicklaus says good-bye to a tournament, Tiger Woods wins. That was the case at the PGA Championship in 2000 and again at the Masters this year. Can this awkward coincidence continue?

One Response to "Sluman Holds Second Round Lead while Some Big Names are on Their Way Home"

  1. Bart Bryant's clutch putting Sunday and great save on 18 propelled him to victory at Jack's tournament.
