Pros: Easy to hit, even great on off center hits....
Cons: Strong lofts mean learning distances again
I was playing Ping i15 last year and although I liked these the feel was quite hard and I swiched to Mizuno MP-57 and allthough it wasn't difficult for me to control these semi-blades it just happens that you have a day you're slightly off and it was so easy to be slightly off with these that I decided to go for an easier iron.
So I went to my local shop, which is a dealer of Cobra, Mizuno, Titleist, Ping, Cleveland, Taylor Made and Wilson Staff.
Actually I went in with an open mind to buy a new set of irons, regardless of brand, just to find an iron that would feel good enough to support my target of hc. 0.0 in 2011, but first it should be an iron I could place behind the ball and hit with confidence....... based on advertising I was very keen on trying the Wilson Staff Ci9 ( I used to play Wilson Staff Fluid Feel 25 years ago).
The Wilson was just as hard on off center hits as the MP-57 was, allthough the slightly longer blades felt very confident.
So I liked the look of a slightly longer blade, which narrowed my choices ..... then I tried the new Mizuno JPX-800 in both the standard and Pro versions .... I liked the forgiviness of the standard and the feel of the Pro. The manager came buy and suggested to try the Cobra S2 ..... all I can say is WOWWW !..... easy to hit, but still quite workable.
I don't care about being punished when I thin a ball, if you thin a ball with these you still have a result that keeps you in play !!!
The club has no thin topline, which I liked from the Mizuno's, but being black for about 50% suggests a narrow topline at adres.
I know it is a GI iron and it is cast, still the feel is great and if you hit it near pure it really goes out splendid.
But when I went to the range ...... it was very hard to control the 3i (wellll that is bc of the loft is identical to a 2i of any other set) actually all lofts are very strong ...... that is making the switch difficult ...... I have to relearn distances.
Anyway I have been playing these irons for a month now and I feel very confident with them. PW 135 yds feels a bit strange though..........
