Skillzys Golf Rule Tagz

Pros: Simple, compact, full of information

Cons: Just one more thing to hang off your bag

I have to admit that I am an equipment junkie when it comes to golf.  I love buying anything and everything that has to do with the game.  When I saw the Skillzys golf rule tagz, I knew that was something I wanted in my arsenal.

I like to think that I know the basic rules and the outcome of most hazardous situations you will find during the course of play.  But it never fails that when playing in a group, a situation occurs and no one can seem to agree on the ruling.  The Skillzys rule tagz would easily solve this issue. They are the size of a credit card, so they aren’t in the way.  They are conveniently located on a key chain like strap that connects to your bag.  And they are full of essential information when it comes to the most common rulings that you will encounter on the course.  You’ve got your red stakes card, yellow stakes card, white stakes card, obstruction card, common rules card, and the unplayable lies card.  It’s like having a PGA rules official on your bag at all times. Each color coded card has all of the options for play depending on the predicament in which you find yourself.

At first glance of these, I was afraid of losing them with the supplied bag attachment.  But upon closer inspection, I saw that the cable used to make this attachment had threaded ends. Very nice addition and deals with the fear of losing them.  The idea is genius and convenient as I stated earlier.  Me being a picky person and not liking a lot of “stuff” on my bag, I only had one thing I didn’t like about them and that is the simple fact that they hang off my bag.  Wow!  How nitpicky?  I know, I know.  But that is just me personally.  So with that being said, they will get used whenever possible (especially in our games when I need to call out some playing partners on that foot wedge), but they will end up in my accessories pouch rather than hanging off the side of the bag.

Long story short, I give them two thumbs up!!  They are a great idea that is simple and to the point! And the best part, no more arguments over how the ball should be played!

Pros: Small, colorful, easy to read.

Cons: None.

If you are like me, you know the rules of golf, but when it comes down to actually applying them, you can never remember if it's 1 club length or 2 or if yellow stakes mean water or lateral.  With these new "Rule Tagz" by Skillzys, the guesswork is gone.  6 colorful, credit-card sized plastic tags, each with the basics you need to know for a particular rule, at the ready whenever you need them.

One tage each for Yellow Stakes, Red Stakes, White Stakes, Obstructions, Unplayable Lies, and "Common Rules."  On the back of each are everything you need to know for that particular rule.  As an example, on the back of the Red Stakes card it gives you all 5 options you have when your ball is in a red staked hazard.

No more guesswork.  Obviously, if you know the rules like the back of your hand, like many of you do, then these are not necessary.  (Also, if you are a "winter rules" kind of golfer who doesn't really care to keep proper score, these aren't necessary for you either.)  For those of us that don't know all the rules, these cards, which attach directly to your golf bag with an easy screw-on wire clasp, will provide all the help we need to confirm that we are playing by the rules.  And most likely, after having to make use of these cards for a few rounds, we will start retaining the info and the cards will only serve as a safety net.

These things are a winner in my book.

The wire clasp seems pretty sturdy to me ... time will tell.

Pros: Excellent on the course rule reference guide

Cons: Small cable to attach Tagz to bag

Quick!  What are your options if you hit a ball into a lateral hazard?

Instead of fumbling through your bag and then thumbing through your rulebook - if you can find it - you can simply refer to your Skillzys Golf Rule Tagz hanging from your bag.

Golf Rule Tagz are an incredibly simple concept; six waterproof plastic cards - each the size of a credit card - with some of the most common situations golfers face on the course, and the options available to the player printed on the back.  The situations covered are lateral hazards (red stakes), direct hazards (yellow stakes), out-of-bounds (white stakes), unplayable lies and obstructions.  The sixth card deals with "common rules" such as casual water, loose impediments, ground under repair and lost balls.

Think of Golf Rule Tagz as a sort of Cliff's Notes - or Spark Notes for younger generations - for the USGA  Rules of Golf.  They don't cover everything, but they definitely cover the rules questions that golfers ask most often on the golf course, and provide the player with the correct options.  By providing this information in a quick and handy manner, having Golf Rule Tagz are kind of like having a rules official dangling from your bag everywhere you play.  For tournament play, Golf Rule Tagz would be a great way to speed up play in the event of a rules question.  It's also a great way to help juniors learn the rules of the game and always have a handy reference available.

The only complaint that I have with the product is the cable that they come with to attach them together and to the bag.  It is very thin and the threaded clasp that holds the ends of the cable together can be a bit tricky to connect.  I didn't have any problems with it, but I can see where someone with limited vision and/or fine motor skills could experience difficulty threading the ends of the clasp together.

So... have you figured out what your options in a lateral hazard are?

I have.

I have Golf Rule Tagz on my bag!
