Pros: Feel, durability, high visual contrast
Having not played an alternate color ball in the past, I was pleasantly surprised while trying the Vista IS Orange.
The orange color was bright, had good contrast with the grass, and was easy to find in the rough. I attribute some of the ease to higher mental awareness, since I knew I was not looking for a traditional white ball. Overall, I can only give the orange color positive remarks.
Where the bright orange color provided a distinct advantage over a traditional white ball, was playing on a cloudy day. We all know how quickly a white ball blends into a dull gray sky, but the Vista Orange did not have this issue. The orange color provided great contrast which allowed for easy tracking on every shot.
The Vista IS performed as well as any tour level ball on the market. I did not have any loss of distance or excessive side spin. The ball provided great feel off the driver and irons. I am not a high spin player but could get the ball to check up quickly on well struck shots.
Similarly, short game feel and putting receive high marks, stopping quickly on short pitches and a soft feel off the putter face. Durability is on par with other balls in the tour level category.
I’ve only spent a short time with the Vista IS, so it is hard to say whether I will give up my old ball for this, but the Vista IS has my attention. I like the bright orange color more than I expected and will probably pick up a few more to continue testing over a longer period. If you are curious, like I was, about trying an alternate color or want to give another tour level ball a shot, I would definitely recommend giving the Vista IS a try. If Volvik can find a way to drop the price slightly below other balls in this category, it would go a long way in gaining a full time spot in my bag.
