Jay, unfortunately, you've got some things wrong. You may agree with Jack's opinion on distance, but it's still an opinion - it isn't "right" or "wrong."

Jack's game was predicated on power. He was 40 yards longer than most of his competitors. And as you note, he still had more to spare. Jack didn't dominate because he was the best putter - he was an average putter with a so-so short game. He made important putts when he had to, and I agree that he waited for others to make mistakes, but that doesn't change the rest of the facts.

Let's move on and post to an article that's not over a year old, okay?

As far as criticizing the modern game, and the distance balls travel in particular, he is right. With the equipment improvements, courses are becoming obsolete. It's like putting a formula 1 car on the interstate. As far as Jack's dominance "predicated on power", not true. Sure he had power to spare. And that is what he did. He used only about 80% of his power. He dominated because he was the best putter and the most patient and waited for others to make a mistake. Not to metion a will of iron and the ability to perform under pressure.

Incidentally, a year later, it's exceedingly obvious that the axe will not fall this year, next year, or any time in the next decade on Jack's tournament. He may have ticked a few people off in his years, but he throws a quality PGA Tour event which attracts a quality field.
