Dr. J has to be the best. Think of all the dunks we've seen and he originated almost all of them:

Leaving the foul line-Check
Dunking two balls at once-Check
One Handed tomahawk from the middle of the lane-Check
360-Check

To top it off, he was a brutal game dunker. Just ask Bill Walton.

That said, the two best dunks I've ever seen:

Dominique's two handed tomahawk off the backboard. Left the floor from roughly the same distance Dwight Howard did on the Superman dunk.

Tom Chambers' dunk on Mark Jackson. Don't know if youtube has it but it is the most ridiculous dunk I've ever seen. Chambers' chest was above the rim and no, it's not an exaggeration. If I can find it, I will post it.

How about that Dominque TWO-handed windmill off of the baseline. I'm sorry to MJ but that was a better dunk than the "all ready been done" freethrow line.

I had to go with VC...in his prime, he was fun to watch. Dwight Howard is fun to watch too...does anyone else besides me think that he didn't plan to throw the ball in? As for the older dunk contests, ive only seen the re-runs (some of those were before my time).

Howard's throw-in was an insult. He jumped from too far away and threw it in b/c he's such a beast, but I don't really get why everyone went so nuts. The double-tap was sweet, and I thought Green's "birthday cake" was underrated - to get that high and close enough AND blow out the candle, all while holding off on dunking the ball? Sweet.

Dominique = most powerful. He would two-foot jump and just be so aggressive, all while yanking the ball all over the place and then slam-jamming it home.

Dr. J = most graceful. His strides and arms were so long, it's like he could cover the whole court in four steps, all while palming the ball like most of us hold a grapefruit. He would just soar and sweep.

Michael = just magical. He would slowly jog toward the rim, then one-two-WHAM, he was in the air and did like forty things that you couldn't appreciate until you saw it in slow motion. I swear on my life, there were times where the slow motion would make you believe there must have been some clear, acrylic platform that he stepped on in mid-air to keep him in the air.

Vince Carter = most athletic. That guy could jump one direction, turn his body the other, then swing his arms and the ball yet one more direction, all while having jumped 46" off the floor.

Howard is just too big. The Superman thing didn't work for me. The from-behind-the-backboard was just a show of his nutty size. Most of what is so amazing, IMO, comes from the fact that he's got a good 12" of reach over everyone else.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

The throw in was why everyone went nuts. He's seven feet tall and look where he left from. There isn't a 7 footer, built like him, that has ever done those things. (I read where his vertical leap is almost 40 inches.)

The birthday dunk should have been a perfect score. Had he dunked sockless without it being a repetitive dunk, that would have scored, higher, too. Dunking sockless? After going between the legs while airborne? Just amazing.

I gotta go with Vince Carter. A couple of the dunks he did that year, I don't think anyone else could do....period.

Jordan was the prettiest, and got the closest to the foul line on a take off. He just looked like he was literally flying when he did that dunk.

But the difficulty factor goes to Vincanity :)

He dunked it with 2 hands only about a foot short of Dr J's almost free throw dunk

It was nice to see the dunk contest be much more entertaining than recent years. However I don't think it came close to reaching the excitement level of the Jordan vs Dominique years. And as far as best dunkers of all time I'd say Dominique, Jordan and Dr. J.

I agree with you. Nothing can compete with the excitement of the BEST players giving their BEST dunks. How much different would this year's contest be if it were Lebron vs Howard, with some Kobe thrown in?

I think what Spud Webb did was incredible, the dunks he was doing for that height is crazy. We're talking 55+ inch verticle leap.

I kind of thought the (Dwight Howard) throw in took away from the dunk, therefor making it not really a dunk, technically speaking. Everything Dwight Howard did though was creative, he diserved to win hands down. And i agree it is incredible how high the guy can leap at 7 ft. I actually heard the announcers say he was trying to get them to raise the hoops to 12ft. Only thing is, i knew Jamario Moon didnt get to do his good dunks, and the ones he did do werent executed good enough.

im going to disagree on the dwight howard judgement, a dunk is defined as "throwing it down" dwight did jsut that threw it into the bucket, i think thats why it is considered a dunk, in fact what dwight did is quite difficult and actually harder than dunking while touching rim.

jamario if you watch the clips that he had on youtube can actually dunk 2 feet beyond the free throw line and i think he got robbed on the second one, if he didnt put the tape on the floor that dunk probably would have got him into the second round, but he put the tape down and didnt jump from the tape. and dunking shoeless should have got gerald green more points but like mentioned it was a repeat dunk just without shoes which hurt him, dunkinng shoeless hurts and is hard to get enough lift to go through the legs.

This is the first dunk contest I have watched in a long time and agree that it was very entertaining. Say what you will, but the Dwight Howard superman jump shot was not a dunk. It should not have counted much less been given a perfect score.

Now, here's what went down: D-Howard came out with that amazing first dunk. Nobody had done a dunk like that before EVER--it took creativity, athleticism and a pretty long damn reach. Add that to the fact that Howard got robbed last year on his "sticker" dunk because the judges were all too old to see the sticker 13 feet up on the backboard (just kidding). People were looking for a reason to give it to Howard. He won the contest on his first dunk. The rest was just icing.

I agree, his first dunk was awsome and was very deserving of the perfect score. You are probably right that set the tone for the whole contest. I will admit I did get caught up in the moment when he took his jersey off and had the Superman shirt on. It made you think what the hell is he going to do.
