I have a bit of spare cash to splurge on a new set of irons and love the look and feel of the pings, but which one for an 18 capper (and dropping) i or G 10?? i know that the i10's are for better players but where do you draw the line, I really hit down hard on the ball with a steep attack angle does that make any diference?

I'm a 25 HC (and dropping) and I picked up a set of Cobra FP's, which are similar in function to the I10's. I would opt for the I10's as they will give you more ability to work the ball as your skills increase. I didn't need all the forgiveness that something like the G10's offered. I can hit pretty well in the center of the face (it's my short game and driving that's killing me). Plus, I just didn't care for the huge head on something like the G10. I like the appearance of a smaller iron head.

i would recommend the i10's!

the g10 are a huge club. but the i5's/i10's are not entirely a traditional player's club in the true sense. they both both i's offer great forgiveness as well as playability! got for the i's.

Well, I'm a 22 and the i10s are on my list, right after the Mizuno MP-57s, to consider for my next set, appropriately enough for when I hit handicap around 18.

If the concept of a "players iron" scares you, think of them as "swing improvement clubs" (as opposed to "game improvement clubs").

I'm planning to ask about this in a week or so when I gather my thoughts on folks like you and I getting these clubs. I'm planning to get "players irons," but I'll be soliciting opinion. I need to gather my thoughts coherently for the post first.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

If you´re getting down your handicap, working in your swing, perhaps the i10 will suit you better. If you don´t have too much time and need a lot of forgiveness, go with the g10.

I´m a 13 hcp, and I´ve found that there is a time when game improvement irons make you worst, and you need a more players irons to improve. I don´t mean blades, but something in the middle.

I´ve changed to the i10 coming from a Wilson Ci6 (a mid-handicappers irons) and I´m glad I did. The i10 have some cavity but will force you a bit to improve.

Hope this helps.

Caddyshack,

I was in the same boat as you where in back in Sept. when the 10 series just came out. I previously had the tour edge bazookas ( super game improvment) I was feeling a need to upgrade, I didn't real have to but once it was in my head, it became a losing battle with the tour edges. Anyways I demoed both the I and the G fromt he 10 series. The I thought the G's head was to big and felt like a super game pimprovement iron, disn't feel like I was upgrading from the tour edges. So then I tried the I's and the head was a bit to small for me felt to much like a blade to me. So my fitter said try the I5's and I did and they where a perfect match for me, they kinda sit right in the middle of the 2 G deries clubs.

I am not sure if you can still get them new or not, but if you can and before you buy take a look at them, you might be surprised.

I would go with the i10's. Last year I used Callaway X-18's (pretty similar to the G10's) and played pretty well with them, but they did nothing at all for my swing. I could hit the ball off the toe and not even realize I had done it unless I looked and saw the mark on the club - feedback and punishment were nonexistant. At Christmas I switched to the Wilson Pi5's and I am glad I did. When I hit the ball off the toe I know immediately - the stinging in my hands is not horrible, but it's enough to make me want to avoid it. Distance is reduced by ~10%.

There are some other things to think about too : You say you hit down pretty hard on the ball, so I'm guessing you have a pretty high ball flight. The increased offset and lower center of gravity of the G10's may create a higher trajectory than you desire.

How ironic, I am in the same boat! I used to play a bunch but put the clubs up for about 6 years while I got my career on track. Now my career is bringing me back into golf(thank god) as I have a ton of HNW clients that like to play and some play well.

Right now I am probably a 20-22, but with a little work with my new teaching pro and range time I should have that down to a 10-12 this year...which is where I used to play. I think that right now the G10's will be right for me and will help me getting my swing back. In a year or so I will switch to the I's and go from there. I am going to let me teaching pro advise me too and take her advice. I talked to my local ping guy and he said a bunch of people are buying G10 through about seven iron and then the I10's through the wedges...that was an interesting concept and a possibility.

I had G2's for 3 years, and switched to i10's last September. I'm glad I did. When I bought my G2's I was getting back into the game after several years off, so they served a good purpose. But as I got better, I found the offset on the G2's had me hitting left too often than I'd like, and the the low center of gravity put the ball too high for me. The i10's are less forgiving, but I hit them farther, and my ball striking and confidence with them has been much better. It took me a few months to get used to them, but I'm glad that's what I went with.

For an 18 hanicapper--i would strongly recommend the Ping EYE 2's..They are more forgiving that the i-10's and the G10's IMO---Ive them out and can tell you that the old EYE 2's still stand up to todays equipment...they are still found on the PGA Tour today and they also can be found pretty cheap on EBAY..I paid like 209 for mine..Best of Luck with your choice

Thanks, I have hit the eye 2's at a range and they are fantastic, only problem is im 6f3 so i will need to be fitted for my new clubs so it may be hard to find some eye 2's that fit my requirements, is it possible to get them adjusted ?

Yes-you could get the EYE 2's reshafted--Ive heard that Project X's in Eye 2's are a great combination..
