Hi All,

Just curious what your driver numbers are and what driver you guys are using. This whole LM thing is very confusing. Sometimes the club they suggest work good and sometimes they are just way off.
I was getting around 2100 spin rate off a 9.5 head with a stiff graphite shaft. My swing speed is around 100. My previous drivers were just giving me all carry and then hop out of their divot hole so I felt like I was losing yards.

Thanks

That is a good spin rate assuming you have a 100mph or more swing speed, but you have to know the launch angle too.

To give you an idea for someone with a 100+ mph swing, you generally want a 12 to 13 degree launch angle with between 2000 to 2500 rpm spin rate.

The loft of your driver doesn't mean anything by itself. The launch angle will be the result of the loft of the club and the angle of attack combined. The spin rates and launch angles above are roughly what are going to get you maximum distance. Find out what your launch angle is with your driver because that is more important. I only say that because you can change balls to get different spin rates easily, but changing drivers like underwear can get expensive.

I use a Ping Si3 with 9 degrees of loft and get between 12.8 and 13.4 degrees launch consistently. I then use high compression balls when I know the fairways are hard so the ball gets down quicker to take advantage of the big bounce. When I'm going to a nicer place that I know is well maintained I whip out the "control" balls to maximize carry.
Damn I miss those old "Top-Rocks" at the end of the summer! Put a low draw on one of those babies on a hard fairway and they would scoot an extra fifty yards. Oh well.

Hi Tom,

You make some good points. My launch angle was around 12-13. I was swinging only around 70 percent due to a recovering injury. This is a crazy science. I went to try this Adams bty driver because I heard it was really low spin. So I'm on the LM hitting that and another guy walks up. I give him the driver to try and his spin rate was over 5000 while mine was nearly 2000. It's just amazing how all these factors equal distance.
My typical ball flight with my old sumo driver was really high all carry and back out of its pitch mark. I'm atleast 1-2 irons longer than my group but was not showing up off the tee for some reason thats the reason I'm looking into all this stuff. I'll report back when the driver gets here.

Thanks Oh and I did have the idea of trying different balls in specific conditions like you mentioned

    • Day 35, June 8. Before leaving for work this morning (yes, I'm posting this quite late relative to the practice), I spent 15 minutes practicing at home, into a net.  This time, it was primarily 9-iron (full swings), with some UW (full and half) and a few 6-iron.
    • Day 73: just some mirror work today. Working on feels for being open and getting the front shoulder down.
    • I'm liking this. Finally getting down hands in front of my trail leg pocket consistently at A6 with much better clubhead position (relatively not as tipped out). I can really pressure the shaft through impact with good face control  from this position and stay in balance. Won my first one v one march 5&4 against a 4 hcp who routinely drives it 35-40 yards past me in the men's club match play . Frustrated him with some solid iron play and air tight putting.
    • Day 279 6-8  Worked on low point control skills work tonight. will be doing this for a few weeks. Tonight was just trying figure out how to get low point forward.  No ball.
    • Day 8 (Jun 8 26) - Stayed the drill but added two additional irons (7i, 8i and 9i) - using Divot Board and hard foam balls - focused on tempo and purposed pause at the top….noticing how open the club is marking the board when I try to kill it and how much more square (and better distance) when I focus on these keys.
